Mumbai, August 7, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) Ideal Drama and Entertainment  Academy (IDEA) has organised Hindi play festival ‘Prem- Utsav 2012′ to commemorate the 132nd birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand. The festival is being organised at Sathaye College in Vile Parle (East),Mumbai. The festival began on 31st July and finished on 9th August 2012. The entry is free and the timings were 5 PM to 10 PM. The General Secretary for the event is Aaliyah Khan and President is Mujeeb Khan.

Banchbo is an organization that provides help to underprivileged children and senior citizens. The organization was started in 1995 and it started organizing puja ratings for kids from 2002. The association proceeded with pride and also received help from different other sectors and individuals. In 2008, it started extending its help for the senior citizens. It features participation from children and older people from Sunderban, Malda, Purulia and West Mednipore to Kolkata during the Durga Puja and makes them see and enjoy the festive spirit of the occasion. These chivalrous activities of the organization are supported by many Puja samitis and other individuals.

Save A Mother Launches NO LAUGHING MATTER Comedy Tour to Raise Funds for Maternal Mortality Reduction

New York, NY, July 12, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) While it’s no laughing matter, Save A Mother and Comedian Anish Shah, announce a Comedy Tour to raise $100,000 in support of their maternal mortality reduction program. Save A Mother is a nonprofit organization that provides an aggressive health literacy program that trains volunteer village health activists to educate, empower and connect pregnant women to public health systems in India.

“Maternal mortality rates in India are possibly the highest in the world after Africa. The number of women we lose due to pregnancy related issue in one week in India is more then all of Europe in one year", said philanthropist and actress Shabana Azmi, a longtime supporter of Save a Mother.

Social Activist and Actor, Anupam Kher, supporter of Save A Mother, chimed in, “Every year women die in India while giving birth; it’s ironic while they give birth to a new life, their own life finishes. By helping Save a Mother, you are helping mothers that are finishing their life at a very young age.”

Image via WikipediaWashington, DC, June 13, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) A Hinduism Summit (Hindu Dharmajagruti Sabha) will be held in the Cultural Hall of Durga Temple of Virginia in the Washington DC Metropolitan area on Saturday, 18th June 2011 (Jyeshth Krushna Trutiya, Kaliyug year 5113 as per the Hindu calendar).  This unique event will commence with Vedic recitations, lighting of an auspicious oil lamp and blowing of a conch in the tradition of Hinduism.  The Hinduism Summit will be organized by non-profit Hindu organizations, Durga Temple of Virginia and Forum for Hindu Awakening.

The Hinduism Summit will feature insightful presentations aimed at creating an understanding about Hinduism concepts, like the ‘hierarchy from the unmanifest Supreme God to the manifest God, Incarnations and Deities,’ and issues faced by Hindus, like denigration and genocide.  It will highlight Hinduism’s practical solutions like the simple Agnihotra sacrificial fire for current problems like nuclear fallouts.

Kolkata, June 21, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) 'Jirnapatar Jharabelae', a profound yet captivating evening commenced with the magical voice of the anchor on stage of Kala Kunj, Kolkata and his tribute to late Mrs. Smriti Bose. With the heartfelt speech of Subham Bose, the son of late Mrs. Bose, the 'Smriti Seba Foundation' has been officially launched in the evening in 'Kala Kunj', in the memory of a loving mother, a timeless singer Mrs. Smriti Bose. The founding announcement had taken place on 18th June 2012 at Calcutta Press Club through a Press Conference, interacting with friends from media about future course of action and activities. Bharati Mitra & Tagore Music Group of Washington Spellbind Capacity Audience with Chhobi - A Musical


Bengali Musical Production CHHOBIGermantown, Maryland, June 26, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) On Sunday June 24, 2012, The Tagore Music Group of Greater Washington DC, lead by Bharati Mitra (interview) of Gaithersburg presented CHHOBI - A Musical to a mesmerized capacity audience at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. The performance showcased an innovative collaboration between the Tagore Music Group and students of the Natyabhoomi School of Dance of Bethesda which is lead by Deepti Naville. Deepti teaches the Indian classical Bharatnatyam dance form while her sister Shruthi Mukund teaches fusion dance at Natyabhoomi.

Chhobi is adapted from a short story by iconic Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay set in Burma (Myanmar). The musical production stands out for successfully and seamlessly blending in songs by another Bengali icon - Rabindranath Tagore, and Burmese folk dances to the script as well as the general air of authenticity by using Burmese dresses and music. Shruthi Mukund of Natyabhoomi deserves kudos for successfully studying and learning Burmese folk dance from videos on the internet, choreographing and teaching her students all in a short time with impressive results on stage.
