On Tuesday 1st December 2009 the evening program started with the Inaugural Ceremony which was followed by felicitation of Eminent cultural and social personalities of Kolkata, and a colourful cultural presentation to mark the commencement of the 30th Anniversary Celebration by The Youth Guild for Friendship.

The second part of the program comprised of Rabindrasangeet songs by Manoj Murali Nair and Manisha Murali Nair, Nazrulgiti by Susmita Goswamy, and Bangla Band Ujania headed by Nazmul Haq in Folk songs and Meghatithi Banerjee. Everybody was excellent in performance. Veteran elocutionist Saumitra Mitra recited in celebration of a 100 years of Gitanjali, the book for which Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore received a Nobel Prize.  There were dance performances by Aditya Mitra, Alokparna Guha, Paramita Chakraborty and Keya Chanda.

Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) is in front of the camera in upcoming film “Son of a Preacher Man” about the life and times of Grammy winning singer-songwriter-producer PJ Morton.

Besides Rahman, other cast includes American Gospel musician Kirk Franklin (Norbit), Grammy nominated American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard (Life on a Stick), and producer Warryn Campbell (Stomp the Yard). Shot in Atlanta and New Orleans in USA and London in United Kingdom, it will be released in 2010. Michael Akwesi Djaba (Reasonable Excuse) is the director.

IFFK 2009 PosterThe International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is almost exactly as old as the Kolkata Film Festival. The 14th edition of IFFK will be held at Thiruvananthapuram (formerly known as Trivandrum), the capital city of Kerala in the South of India from 11th - 18th December 2009.

Bengali films to be shown at the 14th Kerala Film Festival 2009 include films like Calcutta My Love/ Kaalbela by Goutam Ghosh starring Parambrata Chatterjee and Paoli Dam, Maya Bazaar by Joydeep Ghosh and many more.

A special Mrinal Sen retrospective will include  Calcutta 71  (1972), In search of famine/Aakaler sandhane (1980), This is my land/Aamar bhuban (2002), The Confined/Antareen (1993), Ek Din Pratidin / A day like any other (1979) and many Hindi films from the acclaimed director.
