A Big Dream Coming True At Shri Aurobindo Institution of Kalyani, West Bengal | By Barnali Saha

A classroom in session at the Sri Aurobindo Institute, Kalyani

A Big Dream Coming True:
The good works of the Shri Aurobindo Institution of Kalyani, West Bengal.

by Barnali Saha

I have always felt that there is a wall between us and the world. It is as if some mighty drapery is shutting down our complete view of the other side. In our warmly lit, fire place rolling sumptuous world we live in one glass house of comfort while the landscape on the other side faces drastic tectonic shifts everyday. In the other world existence is a struggle in itself and paucity is the only procession that its inmates have. On my last visit to India, I had a microscopic view of the pain and the sullen current of despair that flows in the other world, And what I found strange is that most people talk about this other world at length, they write, they are vociferous but when it comes to changing the condition that persists, only a handful of men come to the forefront.  I was lucky to have come across a galaxy of such wonderful men and women struggling hard to make the other world a better place to dwell.

Experimental Bengali Movie DVD Release - Five No-Budget Films by Little Fish Eat Big Fish: Kolkata Book Fair 2010

In the best of Calcutta traditions, a group of smart intellectual Bengali cinema enthusiasts have decided to challenge the decay in Indian cinema driven by commercial box-office greed and subsequent erosion of quality in mainstream Indian cinema being produced commercially and the increasing capability of a hitherto smart audience to digest kitsch.

This group calls themselves Little Fish Eat Big Fish. They write in their blog, "Therefore, we view the existence of a "producer" in the process of film making as an unwanted intervention of the consumerist culture to control and, thereby, subjugate the auteur.". They go on to boldly pursue their goals of great film-making, and challenge film-lovers "to come and see what kind of quality a no budget film can deliver."

Bengali cinema still leads India - Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's 2008 film Antaheen (DVD) just won the Best Film National awards a few hours ago. Along with the commendable efforts of groups like Little Fish Eat Big Fish, the Bengali film lover can be sure Bangla cinema will continue its remarkable eloquence and position of prestige and acclaim as a showcase of the best of Indian film makers.

Finally to come to terms with his old and unspoken prejudice about Muslims, in the larger context of the country in the grips of Islamaphobia as the events of 7/7 and the consequences of the Iraq war reverberate. As he sits drenched and tired on a bench on Hampstead Heath and watches the sun rise – Sanjay puts his demons to rest. At the funeral he has come to terms with himself, he allows the Muslim boy to join the family rituals and sees his daughters for what they are and not what he expected them to be.
