Reportedly inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s debut film Musafir (1957, Suchitra Sen), Mallick Bari by Chitrabani Film Institute holds the distinction of being the first commercial film by a Film Institute from eastern India.

In the movie, Supriya Devi owns Mallick Bari - the house of the Mallicks, that has some benevolent and desirable supernatural properties - rented by Bratyo (Biswanath Basu). Surprisingly Bratyo commits suicide. Ritwik then rents the house, and commences looking for his sister Mani (Pallavi Chatterjee) who has eloped with Rana (Sabyasachi Chakraborty), whose path is not honest. The house is eventually rented by Rudra (Kanchan Mallick) who developes a curiosity about a credit-card telephone marketing agent Purnima (Paoli Dam). They do not wish to meet in person at the onset, and engage their buddies Anindya (Rishi Kaushik) and Madhumita (Swarnakamal Dutta) to break the ice. Expectedly, Anindya and Madhumita also get involved romantically.
