Koena Mitra

Koena Mitra is a former model turned Bollywood film actress. She was born in 1979 in Kolkata, India. Koena studied dancing with Mamata Shankar ballet troupe for 12 years. She has said that she would have become a designer if she had not gone into dancing, acting and modeling.

Koena came into prominence in 2002 by winning the Mega Model Contest of the Gladrags magazine. She became popular as a Bollywood actress via the popular Khullam Khulla song/dance sequence ("item number") in Ram Gopal Verma's blockbuster Hindi film Road (2002). Bollywood refers to non-contextual frivolous song/dance masala sequences that have no relevance to the movie as "item numbers".
