Shot in Nassau and Paradise Islands in the Bahamas, Thailand, Mumbai and Hong Kong, with a budget of Indian Rs. 160 Crores (One Crore = 10,000,000), Blue is India's first Underwater commercial feature film, with underwater scenes with 40 untrained real sharks. Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar play the roles of fishermen in the Bahamas. Lara Dutta is paired with Sanjay Dutt in the movie as the sexy sensuous beach girl and wife. Katrina Kaif is a mysterious woman desired by many. Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue appears in two of the Hindi Film Songs of Blue, singing Bollywood film songs with music directed by Academy Award winning Music Director A R Rahman. Dance sequences are choreographed by Farah Khan. Blue is the debut full-length feature film of director Anthony D'Souza, who has reportedly claimed inspiration from the 1977 blockbuster "The Deep" based on Peter Benchley's top selling novel, as well as the megahit underwater creature movie "Jaws".

The plot revolves around a hunt for sunken treasure, and the challenges, rivalry, misplaced trust and betrayal between three buddies (Sanjay, Akshay and Zayed) during the search.

Akshay Kumar had a narrow escape when he was injured in the head while under water, and in spite of bleeding in presence of sharks, made it to the surface alive and not eaten.
