Srabani Sen with narration by Ratna Mitra: Shei Aami - A Review by Kaustav Goswami

Srabani Sen - Shei Ami - Shei AamiPoet Bishnu Dey had aptly said in his poem,Tumi ki shudhui Ponchishey Boishakh..Baishey Srabon? Rabindranath’s songs are synonymous with the humdrum ,mundane existence of men — not meant for an elite few or to be worshipped on an esoteric altar. Ratna Mitra tries to depict the relevance of RabindraSangeet amongst our oft-encountered situations---ecstasy,despair or moments of nostalgia. A first person narrative of love and languishment,Shei Aami features one of the most popular exponents of RabindraSangeet,Srabani Sen singing the oft heard numbers in dulcet voice with Ratna Mitra as the narrator.Srabani pours her heart out in Tumi Sandhyar Meghamala,Dinguli Mor Sonar Khanchay,Ei Kothati Mone Rekho---the subtle intricacies of vocal glides and her unique style of keeping the voice afloat make each of the songs worth many a rewind. Pradyut’s minimal instrumentation and the use of acoustic instruments in songs like Sraboner Dharar Moto adds a new dimension of contemporaneity to the album. The narrator concludes her tale of union and separation with Jokhon Porbe Na Mor Payer Chinho;Srabani Sen and Ratna Mitra complement each other in their respective arenas, while the former excels as a singer for both the classes and masses, the latter becomes a live character while reminiscing her memorabilia with Pushan.
