Shot on locations in Bhopal and Jabalpur in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the upcoming Hindi new political thriller film RAJNITI has created a buzz in the media about the similarity of the character played by the beautiful Bollywood actress KATRINA KAIF with Sonia Gandhi, wife of the assasinated Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the leader of the Indian Congress Party. Both Sonia and Katrina have foreign roots - Italy in the case of Sonia, UK for Katrina. They both speak accented Hindi. Even the condition and style of the saris worn by the two are being claimed to be too similar to be a coincidence. I will refrain from passing a judgement - you decide if Katrina plays some sort of a role that evokes Sonia Gandhi in RAJNEETI.

Uncannily reminiscent of Rajiv Gandhi, Ranbir Kapoor plays the role of an USA-based Harvard Educated non-resident Indian who has to urgently return to India to take care of his mother's political empire. Katrina is Ranbir's sweetheart, an ordinary woman who is fed up with corruption and decides to make a difference to end up as the Chief Minister of her state.

Indian acting powerhouse Naseeruddin Shah makes a cameo appearance as a communist leader.

RAJNITI also evokes characters from the Indian epic The Mahabharata, in some way rendering the characters in a modern socio-political context. The character of Karna is played by Ajay Devgan. Interestingly, another acting powerhouse - Nana Pathekar - plays the role of Krishna.

And Ranbir Kapoor - the returning NRI - is a modern Arjuna! I guess that makes Katrina Kaif a contemporary Draupadi ?

Director Prakash Jha hired some 500 trained actors to serve as the audience during shooting of political rally scenes in the Indian city of Bhopal.
