13th Year of Celebration of Baikali at Rabindrasadan, Kolkata on 4th September, 2009 as “Many Facets of Mayar Khela" by Tagore

Baikali presents Mayar Khela | Aparna Sen & Pramita MullickKolkata, India, September 9, 2009: Subhomay Mukherjee of Washington Bangla Radio talks to Smt. Pramita Mullick and Smt. Aparna Sen after Baikali's fascinating presentation of Tagore's "Mayar Khela".

Baikali, under the leadership of eminent singer Smt. Pramita Mullick, continuously contributing to propogate works of Rabindranath Tagore Worldwide by using newer forms of expression, experimentation and leitmotifs in a thought – provoking way.

The evening began with a special introduction and performance by Smt. Mullick with legendary Smt. Aparna Sen compiled narration of selected portions of Bhagna-hridaya and Nalini ( the sources of Mayar Khela ) and songs based on the same theme. It was followed by an exquisite presentation of Mayar Khela  by 40 odd singers and actors who sang and enacted their own roles simultaneously on stage in operatic form!! Though the dancers were basically non dancers as because they are singers from Baikali, they danced well under the guidance of Saugata Banerjee, Jayashree Mukherjee and Kaushik Roy. The set in the form of French Opera, colourful traditional Indian Dresses and singing part were very good. Snita Pramanik as Santa and Shruti as Pramoda were good in dancing but Sasha Ghosal as Amar was not comfortable in steps and expression. Even the group dance Esho Esho Basanta on the basis of Gujrati Dandiya was not a skilled presentation.

Sujoyprasad Chatterjee was good in anchoring. The Auditorium was full packed.

After the program I got the opportunity to talk with Smt. Aparna Sen and Smt. Pramita Mullick. According to Smt Sen, she performed since the concept was very interesting , at the same time she too contributed behind the concept. She considered Pramita Mullick as her sister. I asked Smt. Mullick regarding choosing of Mayar Khela. According to her, she choose Mayar Khela due to more number of characters as she wanted to give chance to perform to almost all the students. Again Baikali is basically for singing and Mayar Khela is based on songs ( she has taken 54 amongst 75 songs of the Dance drama ) so every student got the chance to explore their musical talent. Again in the era, where everybody wants to perform individually, she choose Mayar Khela not only for its maturity but also for getting the scope of group activity of all media. It’s a idea like feeling of working in a commune and as a commune. When I praised the French Opera kind of set and contrast of the same with Indian traditional dress and make up of the participants , she told that the set depicted love triangle amongst Santa, Amar and Pramoda so it was in Triangular form and the colour of the sets compromised colour of dresses of main characters i.e. Santa, Amar and Pramoda. Also according to her, the contrast of European set with oriental dresses should be very attractive to the audience. When I asked her influence and relevance of Rabindranath to the young generation, she indicated to the presence of young generation as majority of audience and to the participants whose average age was 30.
