New Bengali film Swabhoomi based on Mahashweta Devi’s Adhoba has a snazzy item song by Dimpy Mahajan

Kolkata, September 16 (Washington Bangla Radio): Ujjal Chatterjee’s upcoming film “Swabhoomi “is based on a novel Adhoba by eminent Bengali writer Mahashweta Devi. A press conference on the film was recently held at the Press Club. The real life persons on the basis of whose lives the characters of the film has been sketched were also present at the venue. Nayantara Devi the woman who vehemently protested against the alleged atrocities on the villagers regarding the Singur Issue and Shyamali Pramanick whose husband was murdered brutally were present at the press meet. Apart from them, director Ujjal Chatterjee along his wife Sagarika, Dimpy Mahajan, Debsree Roy and Sonika Singh Bhatti, one of the producers were also present at the press meet.

On the request of the director Ujjal Chatterjee, the assembled guests and the media persons observed a minute’s silence on the brutal death of Susmita Bandopadhyay, the eminent writer whose biography ‘Kabuliwalar Bangali Bou’ was adapted into the Bollywood film ‘Escape from Taliban’ by the director. The lady was shot dead just a few days back by Talibani terrorists. The director expressed his grief and said that he is still in shock at the incident. He had bonded with writer while making the film “Escape from Taliban”. “She was a brave woman and a great human being. Despite the problems she faced, she always maintained a positive bent of mind” said the director.

Soon he presented two more courageous ladies to the guests. “This press meeting has been called so that Nayantara Devi and Shyamali Pramanick could share their grief with you. It is on the basis of their lives that I have made the film” said the director as he introduced them.

Shyamali Pramanick, whose husband was brutally slaughtered and then buried.  She was in tears when she was explaining the hooro tale of how she had to visit from one government office to the other to claim the body of her husband which was made into pieces and piled up ina bag before being buried. The lady thanked the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her support towards her and also for giving her a job in the railways. The other lady, Nayantara Debi composed  poems as a form of protest against the atrocities in Singur. She sang two songs for the assembled audience. One is “Mone por e Buddhoram, mone pore Nirupom” and the other is “Ami Singurer ek goreeb chasir bou”.

Dimpy Mahajan who has done an item song in the film said that she feels honored to be a part of this film. She said “I consider it to be an honor to be part of such a film in which such talented actors have worked. Though my role is short it is quite important”.

The story of the film is about the loss of lives in while trying to protect the agricultural land. The tug of war between the farmers and the political forces is what the film focuses on. “The message in my film is clear. Humanity should not be destroyed while pursuing materialistic ambitions. Preserving morality in the humans must be the goal in our life. This is what the film conveys.” said the director.

Jackie Shroff, Tapash Pal, Satabdi Roy, Priyangshu Chatterjee, Dulal Lahiri, Ashmit Patel, Barun Chandra, Samrat Mukherjee will be seen playing important roles in the film.
