Bengal Film Journalist’s Association organizing BFJA awards, Celebrating 100 years of Cinema

Kolkata, September 4 (Washington Bangla Radio): After a long gap of Seven years, The Bengal Film Journalist’s Association is again organizing the BFJA awards. The news was formally announced at the Press Club in Kolkata. The award function is to be held on 7th September 2013 at Science City Auditorium. The event was graced by the presence of eminent film personalities like director Raj Chakroborty, actor Soham honorable ministers Shri Arup Biswas (Food Processing & Horticulture, Youth Services, Agriculture, Minister)  Actor turned MLA Chiranjeet Chakroborty and director Haranath Chakrabarty.


Formed in the year 1937, BFJA is the oldest film critics association in India which started its journey with a handful of film journalists and took on shoulder the immense responsibility of supporting film journalism and recognition of Excellencies in film making as well as film journalism. For record, BFJA is the first institute awards in an attempt to endorse and encourage the making of better films.  It became operational just after a year after its commencement when the 1st Motion Picture Congress was held in Faridpur (now in Bangladesh) in 1938. Representatives of the association played a vital role in its deliberations. This year will see the Indian Cinema and Aurora films completing 100 years while the BFJA award will complete 75 years of journey. BFJA has spent many a glorious years all through this time period and can boast of felicitating film legends like V. Shantaram, Mehboob Khan, Sohrab Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and many others.

The press meet also witnessed the launch of the BFJA website which will have all the background, details and information on upcoming events of BFJA.

At the press meet Prabir Ray said,” This year BFJA Awards is really special to us as Indian Cinema & Aurora Films have completed 100yrs. BFJA after fighting the odds and outs has completed 75yrs. In the past few years we couldn’t celebrate the awards due to some reasons. But this year we are going to celebrate art & culture of Cinema. We are keen to honor veteran actor Shri Tarun Mazumder with Lifetime achievement awards. We are also thinking of honoring Actor/Director Aparna Sen for her contribution to Bengali Cinema. The Award will take place on 7th September 2013 at Science City Auditorium.”


Applications for new membership was also invited reminding of the fact that Members of the Association are drawn from the film section of the entire Press of West Bengal which includes dailies, periodicals and film journals in various languages published from Kolkata. Film correspondents and critics working for any newspaper or periodicals published outside Bengal having their base in Kolkata are also eligible to be members of this Association.
