Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Waheeda Rahman inaugurate Voices of India exhibition; Archive of Indian Music introduced

Kolkata, September 2 (Washington Bangla Radio): Kolkata witnessed the inauguration of an audio visual exhibition “Voices of India”, the first of its kind in the city. The curator of this exhibition is Archive of Indian Music. This exhibition will be presented in collaboration with Birla Academy of Art & Culture and RTC, ICCR Kolkata. The exhibition which was inaugurated by actresses Waheeda Rahman, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, writer Vikram Sampath and Mrs. Behera of ICCR will continue till the 15th of September.

Speaking on the occasion, Vikram Sampath, who is a Bangalore based author and historian highlighted on the issue of preserving old Indian Music. “The sole purpose is to spread the awareness about the rich cultural heritage of the country and also about the importance of preserving, documenting, digitizing and archiving these legacies before they are lost. Reaching out to the youth especially in schools and colleges and giving them a new perspective of looking at Indian History is also another objective of this exhibition” said Vikram Sampath. The Voices of India had its first edition in May 213 in Bangalore and accessing the voices of such great stalwarts of music with the help of modern technology is what interests Vikram in this job.

The exhibition will give one a feeling of the old world charm. The music wafting in the air and the various artifacts of the past times gives one an idea of the rich cultural heritage of India. Make up boxes, an elegant four poster bed, lamp, old musical record and old musical instruments- are some of the things that one will be able to see at this exhibition. Apart from this, with the help of a gramophone, music is been played to give the visitors a feel of the past times. From Abdul Karim Khan, Gauhar Jaan, Bengali kirtan, speeches by Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Subhash Chandra Bose, kesrbai Kerkar, M.S.Subbulakshmi and many more have been kept at the exhibition so that the visitors can come and enjoy the music.

After the inauguration of the exhibition by Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Vikram Sampath and Waheeda Rahman, they went for a tour of the exhibition. Javed Akhtar was impressed with the collection. “The work that has been done by the curator deserves words of praise. These are antiques and they are the examples of our rich cultural heritage. The problem in our country is we do not preserve our history. But the work that has been done here is indeed marvelous. This will help the young generation to understand the richness of the Indian culture” said Javed Akhtar.

Looking elegant and beautiful in a pink sari, Waheeda Rahman blushed when music director Debojyoti Mishra claimed to be “one of her biggest fans”. The actress who still looks beautiful surfed through the music and listened to some of the recordings. Commenting on the music collections, she felt that this is a treasure trove for the Indians. Shabana Azmi in a mustard yellow silk sari and her cropped hairstyle looked stylish. The actress was astonished to listen to the music of yesteryear musicians whose names she had heard. “It feels great to listen to the songs of such stalwarts of music” said the actress.

Singer Usha Uthup was present at the ceremony and took over the task of singing the Ganesh Bandana and giving a musical start to this exhibition on music. This was followed by the performance of violin duo Ganesh and Kumaresh Rajgopalan in association with ITC, Sangeet Research Academy.
