Post Graduate degree courses approved for Women’s College Calcutta, Bratya Basu applauds college’s efforts

Kolkata, September 2 (Washington Bangla Radio): Women’s College Calcutta in association with Rabinda Bharati University organized a UGC sponsored seminar on “kothai sure rabindrasangeet ebong anyanya bangle gaaner dhara”. Apart from the seminar, the college also celebrated its seventy fifth year on the occasion. Present at the occasion was Bratya Basu, Minister of higher education and also an accomplished actor, singer Indrani Sen, Soumitra Shekhar (University of Dhaka), Suranjan Das (Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta) and Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury(Vice Chancellor, Rabindra Bharati University).

Mahua Das, the principal of Women’s College welcomed the guests and the students on the occasion. “I am happy to be a part of this institution. Our college has been providing scope for the women students to pursue their goals. We have also started our post graduate course in Bengali from this year. The number of seats that has been allocated to us by the University of Calcutta is sixty. I am pleased to inform you that the seats are all full. The classes will commence from the 29th of August. Pabitra Sirkar will take the introductory classes on that day” said Mahua Das.

Bratya Basu who is currently the Minister of Higher education of West Bengal formally inaugurated the post graduate degree in Bengali course at the college along with the other assembled guests. Speaking on the occasion, he said “It is good that the college authorities have been thinking so much about the future of their students. The opening of the post graduate degree courses will enable them to pursue higher studies”. Speaking on the topic of the seminar, he said that it is better that one do not categorize any creative person like Tagore, Nazrul Islam or others on the basis of their caste, religion or sex. They must be respected for their creativity. That will be the best way to pay respect to them. Bratya Basu who has enthralled us with his performances in films like Ichche, Kaapurush O Mahapurush however has no film projects in his kitty at present. “I am focusing strictly on my political commitments at the moment” said the Minister.

Eminent singer Indrani Sen who is the head of department of the Economics was also present at the occasion. The singer was busy helping with the arrangements and welcoming the guests. In a green sari, the gold jewelry and the simple bun, she looked beautiful. “Rabindranath Tagore is a universal figure. He cannot be divided on the basis of religion or country. He belongs to the entire world” said the singer. Her last album was Bandhan with Ustad Rashid Khan. She is busy juggling her duties as the head of department of Economics and also her recordings.

Women’s College Kolkata has also received the approval of the education department to open up a new branch in Kolkata. It is waiting for the final approval from the government. We wish them all the luck for their future endeavors and hope they continue with the mission of spreading higher education among the women.
