Akshay Kumar - Sonakshi Sinha in Joker (2012): WBRi Movie Review - Aliens put unknown Indian village on World Headlines

Farah Khan promotes Joker (2012) Hindi movie in UK

Kolkata September 1, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Bollywood’s romance with aliens from other worlds has seen a recent spike. Over the last few years, a number of film makers have created some memorable alien characters, especially for children. Jaadu in Hrithik Roshan and Priety Zinta starrer Koi Mil Gaya comes to mind.  Jaadu became the darling of the whole nation and the movie was a great hit. Shirish Kunder’s new Bollywood Indian Hindi movie Joker, starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha, also features aliens. But before judging it on other parameters, let’s have a look at the story and plot of the film.

The story of Joker revolves around a poor village called Paglapur. A NASA scientist Agastya (Akshay Kumar) returns home after many years. He decides to settle there with the ambition to improve the state of his village where he was born and brought up. Like any other poor village of the county, Paglapur is deprived of basic facilities of water and electricity. To make things worse, the village is found nowhere on the map of the country. This is the harsh reality Agastya has explored while meeting the local government agencies. Disappointed and disillusioned, he takes it upon himself to do something unusual to include his village in the map of India. To achieve his aim, he hatches a plan to attract the government and the media to his village. He makes up his mind to take the help of the ETs (in a twisted manner!) to make his village a famous name to hit headlines across the country. The rest of the movie revolves around the execution of the plan and the utter chaos around it.

Coming to the technical and other parts of the movie, the audience will have a nice experience of the special effects. Smart technical acumen is one of the bright features of this flick. In the acting department, Akshay Kumar makes his mark as the central character of the plot. Besides him, Shreyas Talpade delivers a really nice performance as the poor villager of Paglapur, Samip Khurana. He has been able to create a comic and funny environment with his dialogues and other body movements. On the other hand, Sonakshi Sinha has nothing much to contribute in the entire plot. She plays the role of Akshay Kumar’s wife Diva. Other actors like Minissha Lamba, Arya Babbar, Javed Jaffrey and Asrani also come up with moderate performances.

Coming to the music of the movie, the composer GV Prakash Khurana makes a nice attempt through his vocal and instrumental scores. The film has well known singers like Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, Sonu Kakkar and Shweta Pandit make a mark of their own. Some of these songs are already big hits. Moreover, the appearance of Chitrangada Singh as an item girl was good. The item number, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, is already a craze.

The movie is helped along by decent camerawork. Various parts of the village, including the surrounding nature, have been captured in a nice and clean way.

To conclude, Shirish Kunder has delivered a praiseworthy attempt to combine the elements of fantasy and comedy in Joker. There is no reason to watcvh it twice or remember anything about it after it's over, but it may buy you some giggles if you have nothing else to do.

Joker is produced under Farah Khan's banner Three’s Company in association with UTV Motion Pictures and Hari Om Entertainment.
