Rang Milanti (Bengali, 2011) - An Innovative Comedy: Bengali Movie Review

By Aditya Chakraborty

Calcutta, Sep 17, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) If "Arekti Premer Galpo" was about the other sex, Rang Milanti is about young people. The film is about four central characters – Rik (Gourabh Chakrabarty), a software engineer, Tito (Indrasish), a very passionate filmmaker who aims to make it big as a director, Laden (Tanaji Dasgupta) who is a skilled craftsman and economically challenged (lives at Mullickbazar) and last of all DJ (Gourabh Chatterjee) who is actually a DJ at a night club.

All of them are very close to Kamalika, a close friend of theirs and have a soft spot for her. She is aware of this and decides to play a game to choose her life partner among them. This game is played over several rounds with the help of a certain Mr.Ghatak who helps Kamalika to find the ace in the pack of four!

Each of these rounds is designed to bring out the qualities in each of the four like ‘Abhijan’, ‘Amanush’, ‘Kadi Diye Kinlam’ and the sum total added will eventually help to choose the winner.

Kaushik has portrayed this beautifully by depicting posters of films of yesteryear to signify the rounds. Other than these characters, you have Kamalika’s elder sister who is an actress and lives separately from her husband who is a struggling actor and an alternate female ego, a dubious young foreigner and her shady husband with whom the group involve themselves with.

Kamalika’s adviser Dr.Ghatak turns out to be Deep, her brother-in-law who does all this to help his sister-in-law without her realizing anything.

In fact Kamalika’s sister even goes back to him at the end and then relationships again start meaning something else to Kamalika and she starts thinking of factors like compromise, understanding and togetherness which she had not thought of in that manner before.

Kamalika does get to select one of the four at the end, but that can’t be revealed.

The film is very innovative comedy from Kaushik the plus gets points for the performances of the young cast and obviously Saswata who is excellent. Factors like the ace of cards and the story telling are very compact.

Film-maker Riingo has appeared in this film as an actor and completely acts in his own manner! Tanaji Dasgupta as ‘Osama Bin Laden’ is probably one of the best performers in this film among the youngsters.
