Kaya have the distinction of being the first band from Kolkata launching a Hindi album at the national level in India. The album consists of seven original songs composed by Kaya, and is scheduled for a September launch in Kolkata followed by a pan-India launch in October. Arindam describes the work Kaya have done in this album - there is, of course, Bengali folk influence, along with which Kaya have experimented with diverse genres like Sufi and Rajasthani and various regional folk music of India. Kaya have always been strong in folk-rock fusion, and it is natural for them to expand into a greater Indian context to try to reach a larger audience across India. In addition to Archan, Kaya Folk Rockers also features vocals by Kaushik and Mukesh.

Robir Kaya and Kaya Folk Rockers are released by Purple Music whose albums can be downloaded in MP3 udio songs format from WBRi Digital Download Service here »

Kaya have approached Rabindrasangeet in Rabir Kaya the same way as their experimental approach towards Bengali folk music in their prior albums, with a mind towards presenting Rabindra Sangeet in such a way that Tagore's lyrics and music are retained while presentation and instrumentation are oriented towards today's youth. Arindam describes how Kaya have modified the sound-scape while keeping Tagore's compositions intact. Obviously, Kaya have again managed to get it right, since Rabir Kaya has been topping the Bengali music charts for more than a month at the time of this interview.

Kaya was formed in 2002, and released their first self-titled album in 2003 which, as their subsequent albums, was spectacularly successful. You have met Kaya twice on Washington Bangla Radio (in our posts here and here) as well as watched excerpts from their live performance in Washington DC last year.

In their journey of nine years so far, Kaya have released seven studio albums, have toured internationally and performed innumerable shows in India and abroad, won the Best Band award twice (in 2005 and 2010), composed music for five feature films, composed many themes and theme songs for cultural and sports events, and so on.
