Acclaimed award-winning flm-maker Raja Sen is currently busy with promotion of his latest feature film, a homage to Tagore, titled Laboratory written by Rabindranath Tagore himself starring Ravina Tandon, Ranjit Mullick, Arpita Chatterjee, Saheb Chatterjee, Biswanath and others.

Laboratory (Bengali, 2010) will be screened in the USA the last weekend of September, 2010.

Subhomoy Mukherjee of Washington Bangla Radio talks to Raja Sen about his career in film-making in this informal and up-close interview. 

Raja Sen is a director of substance. Whenever we hear about a film releasing  under his direction, we always expect a Bengali classic on celluloid with excellence. He is one amongst very few Indian directors whose films are acceptable to masses as well as to elite film festivals all over the World.

Raja Sen started his career with Television soaps based on Bengali classics and documentaries on Bengali legends. He contributes all his success to legendary film-maker Tapan Sinha whom he has assisted for a long period.

He is committed to his work and versatile too. He is a humanist, who firmly believes in portraying the victory of mankind after a course of conflicts with surroundings.

The realistic sense of his film making brought him three National Awards and a multitude of other prestigious laurels.

In 1993 his documentary Suchitra Mitra received the National Award for best film in the Art and Culture section. In 1995, his debut feature film Damu (buy Bengali movie DVD online) was awarded Best Children's Film and his next film Atmiyo Sajan (DVD sale) received the award for Best Family Film in 1999. In fact recognition and laurels began with Subarnalata - a teleserial in entertainment arena. Adarsha Hindu Hotel and a host of others followed, all topping the popularity charts and making Sen a household name in Bengal.
