Gorumara elephant is now proud mother

Siliguri, Sep 3 (IBNS) Aman became the first captive elephant at Gorumara Reserve Forest in northern West Bengal to give birth to a 'healthy baby' Friday, wildlife officials here said.

The fifteen-year-old pachyderm was employed by the forest department since her arrival from Bankura district in south Bengal eight years ago. She has been working as 'kunki'.

A 'kunki' is used by the forest department for moving heavy timber and drive away wild animals, especially the elephants from the human habitation, said wildlife officer Mita Ghatak.

''Aman is the first elephant in captivity at Gorumara Reserve to have given birth to a calf early this morning,'' she said.

The veterinary officials, monitoring the health of the baby, said Aman gave birth to a healthy female baby.

''She had been straying alone in Bankura forest after being detached from a herd in 2002. Now she has become a proud mother in captive,''  Ghatak said.
