WBRi Event Announcement - Baikali presents Rabindranath Tagore's Mayar Khela - 4th Sept 09, Rabindra Sadan, KOLKATA

Event: A special performance by Aparna Sen and Pramita Mallick followed by Baikali’s “Mayar Khela”

When: 4th September 2009, at 6:30 pm

Where: Rabindra Sadan

Composed by Rabindranath Tagore at the age of 27 and published in 1888, Mayar Khela is essentially an operetta with an ensemble of songs and a veiled dramatic narrative. Here unrequited love is posited against the transient charms of beguilement. In the absence of an all-seeing, superior being who peremptorily guides the protagonists in their pursuits of love, a world peopled by nebulous maidens unfolds before the audience. They weave diaphanous webs of illusion and the characters—Shanta, Amar, Pramoda and her retinue of sakhis (companion), Kumar, Ashoke—get inexorably entangled. At critical junctures, they intone songs which are replete with clairvoyance, admonitions directed at the characters or criticisms of human frailties. But never do they infiltrate the lives of the characters, who are left alone to grapple with their individual problems.

Pramita Mallick's Baikali extends its hearty invitation to you for its 13th Year Celebration, where it will be staging "Mayar Khela". The evening will begin with a special introduction and performance by the legendary Aparna Sen and leading Rabindrasangeet exponent Pramita Mallick. It will be followed by an exquisite presentation of Mayar Khela by a sorority of 40 singers and actors from Baikali, the cultural institute working tirelessly to propagate the Tagorean thoughts and ideals under the aegis of Pramita Mallick. In a marked difference from other similar productions, here the actors will be singing and enacting their own roles. Participants include names like Sasha Ghoshal, Sounak Chattopadhyay and Shruti Naha Sen. The entire programme would be anchored by elocutionist Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee.
