Internationally acclaimed Indian-American Comedian Vijai NathanWashington, DC, Aug 28, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) Leading female Indian-American stand-up comedian and internationally acclaimed solo act performer Vijai Nathan was born in Maryland to parents who had immigrated not too long ago from India. She grew up in predominantly white neighborhoods in suburban Washington DC. As is not unusual for youngsters coming from similar backgrounds, she had to balance between her parents' deep-rooted Indian ways and the inclination of society around her to treat her as a foreigner in spite of being born and raised in America. Eventually Vijai felt the need to stand up for herself and do something about the covert racism she was facing from both sides. WBRi's Gurjeet Singh chats up the young vibrant lady comedian who is coming back for a show in northern Virginia the Washington DC metro area.

Vijai wanted to be a performer from early on. After college, she joined the workforce as a journalist for the Baltimore Sun and had everything conventionally associated with a successful young woman - a good job, a great car, an excellent guy to get engaged with - but she had this inner calling of performing. She took a course in comedy which gave her a great platform to communicate, perform, and also to just write her own jokes, get out there on stage and be herself.

Today Vijai Nathan is a powerful force to reckon with in the world of American stand-up comedy. Her performances are remarkably realistic, being based on her own experiences of growing up as an Indian-American - her expressions instantly familiar to all who have interacted with immigrants from India or are such immigrants themselves. Canadian-Indian comic Russell Peters has said Vijai is one of the top two South Asian comedians in the world to watch.

Her parents are loving every bit of how their youngest daughter turned out. Her father often makes it a point to tell the audience that he is a "producer of the comedian" after her shows that he gets to attend.

In addition to stand-up comedy, Vijai's thematic one-woman acts have been widely acclaimed and often revolve around aspects of her Indian-American identity and her remarkable acumen in observing society. Her other solo acts have dealt with issues like contemporary pressures on women to be all-round perfect. She mostly writes her shows off things that are going on in her mind at the time.

Continuing the captivating conversation, Vijai describes her approach at putting boundaries on comedy, her future plans and aspirations and much much more.
