The story of Chitrangada, as narrated in the epic Mahabharata, inspired Rabindranath Tagore to explore and gave it a new feel with his touch. Tagore's dance-drama has now inspired Rituparno Ghosh to direct a new movie out adapted from it,  presenting it in a way that appeals to the modern society and touches on homosexuality.

Actor-Director Rituparno Ghosh is playing the role of Rudra who, without his parent’s consent, becomes a choreographer and finds that he is in love with Partha, played by Jisshu Sengupta. The story of the film explores issues faced by homosexuals in contemporary Bengali and Indian society.

When he first read the script, Jisshu Sengupta thought his role involving interaction of gay men was very challenging. He knew Rituparno Ghosh and Anjan Dutta are also playing major roles in the film and said that there was a healthy competition between them, even though Anjan Dutta was unaware of it. Anjanda won the competition hands down with his acting skills without even knowing about it, said Jishu with a twinkle in his eyes.

Veteran actors Dipankar Dey and Anasuya Majumdar are playing the roles of Rudra’s parents in the film, also representing the usual middle class educated Bengali family. The story is not only about homosexuality, but also how society deals with it in the modern era. Actress Raima Sen and actor Kaushik Banerjee also play important roles in the film.

Debojyoti Mishra, the music director, said it was very difficult to compose music that retained the essence of Rabindranath Tagore’s Chitrangada and simultaneously, lead the audience to the modern day Chitrangada.

Choreographer Sharmila Biswas said she taught Rituparno Ghosh the Odissi dance form. Choreographing for the film was not easy and sometimes Rituparno Ghosh came up with different ideas and did not want the rigid, mundane rules to be followed.
