Abhijit Basu: Bengali Film Playback Singer, Music Director, Composer and Folk Songs Researcher & Performer - Interview Feature

Video Interview: Paromita Biswas talks to Abhijit Bose in Washington DC

Abhijit BasuWashington DC, Aug 14, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Paromita Biswas, an accomplished singer herself who lives here, caught up and recorded this musical video interview with the well-known folk-songs researcher, singer of folk and Bengali Film songs, music director and composer Abhijit Basu (Bose) who was visiting DC at the time.

During his childhood days in Raniganj, Abhijit was fasinated by indigenous tunes sung by the tribal coolies. The nostalgic childhood memories, strengthened with the inspiration received from Hemango Biswas, encouraged Abhijit to spend almost a decade in remote corners of Bengal, Assam and Bihar learning folk songs and music. His rich tenor prompted eminent film-makers like Buddhadeb Dasgupta to use him and his songs in their films.

Currently a 'Grade B-High' artiste of the All India Radio and Doordarshan, Abhijit has also sung and composed for several T.V. & stage productions. Folk songs of eastern India apart, Abhijit also has an excellent collection of Latin American folk numbers (you will get a glimpse of that in this musical video interview). He has performed at numerous concerts all over India and internationally.

Inspired by his guru' s strong belief that "modern songs can be enriched immensely through a constant dialogue with folk music", Abhijit now experiments with musical fusion. The result has been a second audio album, Aabaar Bhorer Haawa, which comprises eight unique songs - seven are written, composed and sung by Ahijit. The remaining one is a famous poem by Pakistai poet Faiz Ahmem Faiz which he himself has set to music.
