উত্তম-সুচিত্রা | Uttam Kumar - Suchitra Sen in SHAPMOCHAN (1955) An Enduring Bengali B&W Classic: DVD Review & Online Release

Bengali actress Suchitra Sen in Shapmochan (1955)

Mahanayak Uttam Kumar in Shapmochan (1955)

Calcutta, August 7, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Produced and directed by Sudhir Mukherjee, Shaapmochan opened in theaters in Kolkata including Bharati, Rupabani and Aruna in mid-1955 to a fabulous reception among Bengali movie lovers. It remains a great favorite almost three generations from its release.

The star cast is reflective of the top actors & actresses in Tollywood Bengali movies of the time: Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Bikash Roy, Pahadi Sanyal, Gyanesh Mukherjee, Kamal Mitra, Gangapada Basu, Amar Mullick, Jiben Bose, Nitish Mukherjee, Jiben Bose, Tapati Ghosh and more.

Shapmochon is based on a story by Falguni Mukherjee. The music director was Hemanta Mukherjee who composed music to songs written by lyricist Bimal Chandra Ghosh. The Bengali film songs were performed by V. V. Paluskar, Hemanta Mukherjee, Chinmoy Lahiri, Shyamal Mitra and Pratima Banerjee.

In Shap Mochan, a young man Mahendra with a talent for singing decides to not challenge a family curse that seems to result in the death of all family members who follow up on their singing talent. He moves from his village to the city of Kolkata to look for work, living with Umesh - a friend of his father.

The real drama starts when romance kicks in between Mahendra and Umesh's beautiful daughter Madhuri.

As the story progresses, Mahendra goes out of his way to rescue another man and his daughter from eviction and human trafficking, but situations arise that sow the seeds of (baseless) suspicion in Madhuri's mind. Shortly thereafter, Mahendra becomes a singing sensation, thanks to help he had received previously from Madhuri.

A film like this usually has a happy ending, and Shapmochon is no exception. How Madhuri gets over her misconceptions and ends the curse forms the rest of the drama.
