Acclaimed singer, song-writer, composer, creative writer and journalist (among many other interests) Nilanjann Nandy talks to Subhomoy Mukherjee of Washington Bangla Radio in this exclusive, personal and up-close interview. Do not miss his extempore singing.

Nilanjann, now in his middle ages, started giving performances as a child artiste when he was merely 9 years old, in the early 1970s.

Inspiration of his music came from father Batuk Nandy, the legendary guitarist, music personality of all time and his music teacher in school Glenn Stone. Basically a self-taught musician, over a period of 25 years he has trained under the able tutelage of great masters like Tony Menezes (Piano), Carlton Kitto (Guitars), Ustad Sagiruddin Ali Khan (Indian classical Music), Sukumar Mitra (Modern Songs), the ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali (Pakistan), Ramkumar Chatterjee (Puratoni & Devotional) and of course his father Batuk Nandy, Nilanjann evolved into a fine musician and a vocalist by the time he entered into adulthood.

Since he wanted to become a music composer, he honed his skills in Vocal music, Guitars, Piano and various rhythmic instruments in which Drums has been the most favorite of all.

Nilanjann’s musical ‘genre’ is wide. It ranges from: Pop, Contemporary, Adhunik (modern) to Rabindra-sangeet, Instrumental (Guitar, Synthesizer and Piano) Raag-prodhaan, Ghazal, Bhajans, Shyama-sangeet and Puratoni, including Western Music.

Eminent Vocalists like Usha Uthup, Indranil Sen, Lopamudra Mitra, Monomoy Bhattacharya, Raghab Chatterjee, Shampa Kundu, Anasuya Choudhury, Swapan Basu, Nachiketa, Anjan Dutt, Srikanta Acharya, Pratik Chowdhury, Sanajit Mandal, Sudeshna Ganguly, Dwijen Mukherjee and Haimanti Shukla have lent their voices to his compositions and writings.

Among many other many prestigious awards, Nilanjann received the Best Non-film Album Anandalok Puraskar Award for his compositions in the Basic Album titled Ebar Nilanjan, a Saregama HMV release, in the year 2008.

Nilanjann has composed music as well as scored the background music for many television productions and feature films including dramas and basic CD’s.

Nilanjan NandyHe has given live performances all over the country as well as in U.S. Canada, France, South Africa, Bangladesh etc.

Nilanjann has more than 18 albums under his belt out of which, 7 instrumental albums comprising Tagore songs, Film songs and Modern songs dedicated to maestros like Salil Choudhury, Rahul Deb Burman and Kishore Kumar, are runaway successes in India as well as abroad. His 2009 album KISHORE and I, from Cozmik Harmony (mp3 audio songs download), has been an instant sell-out! His last album “Ichchhe” , released in the first week of February 2010, has ten modern songs layering different styles, presenting new and  promising voices.

Nilanjann specializes in fusion music, devotionals and ethnic styles and likes to program his own compositions as well as record and mix them in his own studio: WHITEMAGIC, and is considered as one of the leading music composers and vocalists in the present Bengali Contemporary Music scene.
