New Delhi is the political capital city of India. But our very own city,the city of joy Kolkata is the cultural capital of the country indeed. Every body says(and it is true) that we Bengalis are very much cultured, artistic minded,brainy and romantic too. It is proved that any ordinary Bengali has more cultural sense than any body of any other part of this planet. Yes,it is very true that ‘what Bengal thinks to-day. The whole India(or the whole world?) thinks tomorrow.’ Bengal means a lot of things- freedom, art, honour, culture, education, intelligence, emotion,warmness,romance etc. Bengal has a lot of assets.- The first modern man of India- Raja Rammohan Roy was a Bengali. The patriotic monk of our country Swami Vivekananda,who earned honour for mother India was a Bengali. Rasbihari Basu,who was the founder member of Azadhind fouj,was a Bengali. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose,who gifted us a nation, free from British rulers- was a Bengali. Kabiguru Rabindra Nath Thakur,who won Nobel Prize,when our country was not free,was a Bengali. Michel Madhusudan Datta,who wrote a modern epic Meghnad badh kabya,was a Bengali. That is MAHANAYAK UTTAM KUMAR. He is a great hero. He is a legend. He is immortal. He is one of the greatest actors of the earth. His real name was Arun Kumar Chatterjee. He was born in Ahiritola of North Kolkata on 3rd September 1926. His family’s financial condition was not so good. So he left his studies in a very young age and started working as a clerk in Kolkata Port and also tutored students at a music school to earn more. But his talent and luck made him MAHANAYAK. He acted for amateur theater groups during his early life .He was the swimming champion at Bhowanipur and loved tennis, wrestling, lathi-khela since childhood. Uttam Kumar made his debut film as an actor in Nitin Bose’s ‘Drishtidan’. When the world famous creator Satyajit Roy thought about the ‘NAYAK’, he could not think about any body else except Uttam Kumar. Uttamm Kumar played the famous Bengali detective Byokesh Bakshi’s role in ‘Chiriyakhana’ of Satyajit Roy too. Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen created great onscreen chemistry in movies like Sagarika (1956), Jiban Trishna (1957), Pathe Holo Deri (1957), Harano Sur (1957), Chaoa Paoa (1959), Saptapadi (1961) and Bipasha (1962). He has acted in a couple of Hindi movies opposite actresses Vyjayantimala Bali and Sharmila Tagore like Chhoti si Mulaqat, Ananda Ashram, Kittab, Dooriyan and Amanush. The film ‘Bon Palashir Padaboli’ was directed and produced by Uttam Kumar. His acting capability, performance, screen presense,eyes,lips, approch,gesture,posture, dialog delivery,through, photogenic face, attitude, look, voice, hair cut,smartness, dedication,discipline,personality, passion made him unforgettable and immortal though at the age of 54 he died of heart attack while shooting for ‘Ogo Bodhu Shundori’ in 24 of July,1980.
