The Dresses of Rajasthan



The members of the wild range of animal kingdom do not wear dresses at all. Because they are not rationals. Man is a rational and social animal. So man needs to wear something. We have to wear dresses. We do wear dresses in our regular life. There are different countries in the world. Different countries have different weather,different culture,dresses,food habits etc. Our motherland India is one of the largest countries of the world. It has 28 states all together. We can say that,India is all most a small world itself. Different states of our nation have different weather,culture,habits,needs,tests etc. So the dresses of the different states of our India are not the same,they are also different. The state ‘Rajasthan’ has a Royal fragrance in all over her body(The meaning of Rajput is the children of kings). In summer Rajasthan remains too hot. In winter it is too cold. The temperature of a summer day. in Rajasthan is 450C. But the temperature of a summer night is 170C. In the winter,the temperature of a day is 320C. But,in night,it is 70C only. All most all of us know the fact,that -the largest part of our motherland is surrounded by the oceans. Rajasthan is the only state,which has desert. There is no other colour except yellow (the colour of the sands)in most of the part of the state Rajasthan.. For these reasons,people of Rajasthan has chosen those kinds of dresses,which can fulfil there these criteria(said in above). The dresses they use,are weather proof mainly. In summer,they wear soft cotton made loose and flowing dresses which are generally cut out to cover up most of the body-just to protect themselves from sunburns. In winter, they wear woolen shawls,cloaks,scarves etc. The women of Rajasthan wear cotton/silk ghagra/lahenga-cholies- odhni,sarees. In daily life,they wear ghagras and for formal occasions lahengas become there outfits. These are matched with blouses such as Kanchli or Kunchuki or Choli depending on the blouse length. Men wear dhoti and angrakhi (short frock styled known as ‘kamari angarakha’ or long knee length garments.),head wear. You can see a man in Rajasthan generally in Banda, Bugatari, Pachewara,Khol and Pencha, Sela, Saafa, Potia and Pagri. Muslim men are given to wear Achkans and Kurtas. The kamarband or patka is a waistband that aids in holding a weapon or arm tucked into it. The Royal Rajputs, due to their close association with the Mughal courts adopted the Mughal styles of clothing and preferred richly embroidered brocades and silks from Benares. Exquisite Kashmir shawls and pashminas. The dresses are mainly very colourful. You can see some embroidery or zari work too in the outfits of women. Tie and Dye, Bandhani and block printed textiles are the common choice. As a foot wear the ladies of Rajasthan wear leather(of camel,goat,sheep) chappals called jooti or mojari. They like to wear gold,silver,brass,meenakari and kundan jewelleries.
