The show is now celebrating the 22nd year in Broadway and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece has been keeping thousands of audience, spellbound.

The Venetian, in Las Vegas hosts the Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular is an all-new production of The Phantom of the Opera. The 95 minute show in the custom built theatre transformed us to the world of the phantom. With melodious and haunting music, the show was mind blowing.

We had another chance to witness this masterpiece, in MSU’s Wharton Centre in Lansing. Some 5000 audience applauded as the cursed chandelier went up and the haunting background score kept the audience totally mesmerized.

The scene opens with an Elderly Raoul in the auction house where old things from the opera are being auctioned. He bids for the monkey music box; it reminds him of his fiancé and later his wife Christine. Now it is the turn of the famous chandelier that had crashed during the reigns of the Phantom.

As the auctioneers get ready to unveil the chandelier, the audience is taken back in time to the glory days of the opera house. The broken and ruined chandelier re assembles into a beautiful one, as it once was and ascends into the dome of the theater. As this happens, the dim lights in the auditorium changes to bright yellow and red with the phantom theme in the background…totally majestic!!

The story then moves to flashback where Christine Daaé, a soprano, is auditioned for the main role in the opera. She has been taking music lessons from an ‘angel of music’ who she has never seen. Her beautiful voice is taken over by the magic of the Phantom as she performs’ think of me.’ Her old childhood friend Raoul hears her and remembers his love for her.

The following night, Erik (Phantom) kidnaps Christine after a show and tries to force her into marrying him. If she refused, he threatens to destroy the entire Opera using explosives planted in the cellars, killing everyone in it including him and Christine.

Thus follows the story of love, passion, revenge, betrayal and ultimately sacrifice accompanied with melodious songs and wonderful enactment of the characters by each and every artist.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical was even adapted into a film in 2004. Directed by Joel Schumacher, Gerard Butler, heartthrob of millions and a popular Hollywood star played the role of Erik, the Phantom of the Opera.
