Maura Farrell of U.S. Consulate Kolkata Attends Banchbo Sharad Samman 2011 Awards Ceremony & Cultural Evening

Kolkata, July 16, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Banchbo organized a cultural evening at the Dr. Triguna Sen Auditorium of Jadavpur University Campus on the 14th of July, on the occasion of Award ceremony of Sharad Samman 2011.

Banchbo is an organization that provides help to underprivileged children and senior citizens. The organization was started in 1995 and it started organizing puja ratings for kids from 2002. The association proceeded with pride and also received help from different other sectors and individuals. In 2008, it started extending its help for the senior citizens. It features participation from children and older people from Sunderban, Malda, Purulia and West Mednipore to Kolkata during the Durga Puja and makes them see and enjoy the festive spirit of the occasion. These chivalrous activities of the organization are supported by many Puja samitis and other individuals.

The cultural evening was graced by the presence of Prof. Suprota Bose, Dr. A.K. Roychoudhury and Ms. Maura Farrell from the political and economic section of the U.S Consulate General of Kolkata and Rahul and Priyanka Banerjee from the Bengali movie industry. The members of Rotary club were also present there and the event also witnessed the presence of Swami Chidrupananda Maharaj of Ramkrishna Mission.

Swami Chidrupananda Maharaj gave a speech on Swami Vivekananda and his policies, which created a spiritual atmosphere in the auditorium. The event was held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and to distribute awards for the Sharad Samman to the different Puja organizations and Samitis who have helped the Banchbo group to make the children happy and enjoy the Pujas in Kolkata.

The event featured dance performances, musical performances and presentations by children. Ms. Arpita Nayek, who hails from a poor family in Patharpratima and had scored 84 per cent marks in her Madhyamik examination this year, was awarded a special scholarship on the occasion. Sushil Sharma, the treasurer of Banchbo, mentioned that they mainly work in the rural areas of West Bengal to provide happiness to the different faces, as well as be a part of something good and auspicious.

The programme received overwhelming support from different corporate organizations like Glaxo Smith Kline, Abbott and Suleka Works Pvt. Ltd and others. Washington Bangla Radio is the Global Media Partner of the organization and helps in promoting their deeds. The event was a huge success and it surely made a mark in the minds of people who were present there.
