Washington DC, July 29, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) In this musical video interview hosted by Soumitra Talukdar, acclaimed Bengali singer Lopamudra Mitra chats about her background, experience and musical career interspersed with songs in her golden voice. She is also joined by her husband Joy Sarkar on the guitar. We are confident you will find the impromptu performances by two of the brightest stars of Bengali music mesmerizing.

She started learning music from her father in childhood. Then she learnt Rabindra Sangeet from the Gitabitan Cultural Institute. Thereafter, she started taking lessons on Indian Classical Music under the tutelage of Smt. Rita Roy and later on from Pandit Shri Arun Badhuri. She also had the opportunity to learn light classical music i.e. Bhajan and Nazrulgeeti from Late Shri Sukumar Mitra, Rabindrasangeet from Shri Subhas Chowdhury, Late Subinoy Roy and Aurobindo Biswas.

Lopamudra won the State Music Academy Scholarship. From her very childhood she has been able to display a pleasant flair for singing in group theater. She was attached with 'Class Theater' from the age of twelve under the able guidance of Shri Samir Chatterjee.

With this versatility Lopamudra went for experimentation with Bengali modern songs and ultimately she found her platform in the songs based on poems of renowned Bengali poets. And that was her way to spectacular success. She performed all over India with her new approach and won music-lovers' heart.

Since 1996, SaReGaMa (erstwhile HMV) have released sixteen individual albums of Lopamudra's Bengali modern songs and Rabindra Sangeet. Most of those albums are very much popular among the listeners of Bengali music in India and abroad. She is also very successful as a playback singer for Bengali films.

Lopamudra has performed all over India,several times in U.S.A. including at NABC 1999 and 2009 held in San Francisco and Banga Mela 2005 held in Chicago. She also performed twice in U.K. and once in Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hongkong, Kuwait and Qatar.

She won many awards for her unique dramatic style of singing, which is fashioned with her classical training and tenor voice quality. She won the prestigious Bengal Film Journalists' Award on her debut playback for the film 'Sedin Chaitramas'. Her album 'Bhalobhaste Balo' was honoured as the Best puja album, best singer and album of the year in 2001 by Anandabazar Patrika. Another album 'Ei Abelay’ was awarded as the best puja album in 2003 again by Anandabazar Patrika. Her next album 'Jhor Hote Pari' won the 'ZEE MUSIC AWARD' in 2005.

In the year 2007 her experimental folk album ‘Chhata Dharo’, released under the label of Sagarika Music Company, became a smashing hit. In 2008, ‘Pa-e Para Pha-e Fail’, released under the label of Big Music, was the highest selling album of that year.

Lopa believes that a performer becomes successful when she and her music cannot be separated from each other.
