Calcutta, July 24, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) On behalf of Washington Bangla Radio, Mou Sanyal talks to famous Bengali movie songs' lyrics and film screen-play writer Shyamal Sengupta in an exclusive video interview captured on camera by Soumitra Talukdar.
In his childhood, Shyamal Sengupta had a knack for writing. His first album as a lyric writer was released from Sahana Cassettes sung by singer Anand with music composition by Babul Bose (interview) in the year 1980.
In the year 1985 he went to Mumbai. The famous Bollywood actor Danny Denzongpa and singer Swapna Chatterjee sang songs on his lyrics in an album with Babul Bose’s music direction. After that, he joined the Venus Music Company as a Bengali lyric writer.
As a lyric writer he became very busy at this time when two cassettes from Mumbai and two cassettes from Kolkata were released simultaneously from Venus and Sagarika.
The famous singer Alka Yagnik and Sabbir Kumar sang for Venus Company from Mumbai and Goutam Ghosh and Rajashree Biswas sang to his lyrics for Sagarika from Kolkata. The two albums turned out to be very popular at that time.
His feature film debut as lyric writer was with the 1989 Bengali movie Maryada (Buy Bengali Film DVD in USA), the director and producer of which was the famous Tollywood hero Chiranjeet Chakraborty and music direction was by Babul Bose. The singers were Asha Bhosle, Nitin Mukesh, Kavita Krishnamurty, Swapan Mukherjee etc . Most of the songs of Marjada became very popular. The film had a star cast of Chiranjeet, Satabdi Roy, Biplab Chatterjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Abhishek Chatterjee, Sandhyarani, Gita Dey, Sumitra Mukherjee and others.
Subsequently the Bangla feature film Aparajita directed by Jaidev was released in 1997 where the script, dialogue and songs were written by Shyamal with music direction by Ajay Das.
Shyamal Sengupta's most recently released film as lyric writer is "Bindas Prem" whose star cast includes Mainak Banerjee (interview) as the hero and Bengali actress Megha Bose as the heroine with a supporting cast of Ayon Ghosh, Rajesh Sharma, Paran Bandopadhyay, Bunty Goswami and Rabindrasangeet exponent Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta in her debut as a film-actress. Shyamal is also the lyrisict of "Lakshyaved" (Bengali, 2009) directed by Raj Mukherjee starring Rachana Banerjee (interview), Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Tapas Pal, Swastika Mukherjee (interview), Kanchan Mullick, Manoj Mitra and more with music direction by Kalyan Sen Barat.
