CHARLATA DEVJune 13, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) Listen free to an exclusive interview of Bengali Film Actress Madhabi Mukherjee online :

The genius of Indian cinema Satyajit Ray's CHARULATA (1964) is an adaptation of the  famous story written by Rabindranath Tagore titled Nashtoneer.

The lead star cast of Charulata included Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Shailen Mukherjee, Shyamal Ghoshal, Gitali Roy, Bhola Nath Roy, Dilip Bose, Suku Mukherjee, Bankim Ghosh and more.

Charulata is a subtle masterpiece of Ray’s middle period about the bored and neglected wife of a Calcutta intellectual who falls in love with her husband’s cousin, a young poet who she thinks would appreciate her for what she is more than her own husband. A warm, wry and rounded portrait of the breaking up of a middle-class marriage.

Charulata (The Lonely Wife) was Ray's twelfth feature film. It was also the director's favorite. Ray described the film as the one which has the least defects. In an interview with 'Cineaste' magazine, when asked about his most satisfying film, Ray said, "Well, the one film that I would make the same way, if I had to do it again, is Charulata."
