Kolkata, India, June 11, 2010 : Alice in Wonderland, the highest grossing film of 2010 till date is directed by Tim Burton who has directed weird films like Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory etc- all blockbusters and all of them being fantasy themes. Therefore we can rightly say he is the master of such films and is the ultimate authority to make films on such a subject.

His latest film Alice in Wonderland (an extension of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland) is a brilliant rendition of how live action and animation can help to create a near reality. The story is about Alice, a nineteen year old girl who on the day of her engagement attends a garden party and accidentally falls into a rabbit hole while chasing a rabbit. She is transported into a land called the Underland which she has visited many years back. The Red queen and the White Queen are always at loggerheads and the RED Queen has a dragon like creature called the Jabberwocky who terrorizes the inhabitants of Underland and whom she must fight to save the people of Underland.She does slay the creature and help the people of Underland .She is then transported back to her normal life.

Mia Wasikowska as Alice is good as is Johnny Depp as Tarrant Hightopp, but the show belongs to Helena Bonham Carter (Tim Burton’s real life domestic partner) who is outrageously funny and brilliant as the Red Qeeen.

The film has been released more than a couple of months back, but the premiere of the 3D version of the film took place at the IMAX Theatre at the Mani Square Mall in Kolkata on 10th June, 2010.The advantages of seeing such films on 3D wearing those special glasses is that they make the figures much more clear, more near, the animated creatures seem to be barely a hand away, some fade seem to fade into us like the Cheshire cat in this film. It simply makes viewing more real and magical. This film is no exception.

Mr. Jim Patterson, Director, IMAX Theatre, Kolkata was present himself at the premiere where he welcomed the guests himself. He said that it was proved that the IMAX 3D version of Avatar did better than the regular version. This means that the people of Kolkata are slowly understanding and taking to 3D films which will have a very market soon so he hoped to bring more 3D films to Kolkata whenever possible.

To make the occasion more memorable, some underprivileged kids from a N.G.O in Madhyamgram were also brought to view the film and witness something which was absolutely alien to them.
