Exclusive: Designer Indroneel Mukherjee on Dressing to Make an Impression

“She is not my type at all!”

“He looks so LS!!”

“She looks friendly!!”

“He looks efficient!!’

It is quite usual for us to make snap judgments about people from the clothes they wear!! There is much more to our choices of clothes and the ways of carrying them than we might imagine. This statement is even more apt in eastern world, especially in our Indian society.

The way you dress is the very first impression you draw about yourself in front of the world and thus it becomes your introduction. For many people, what they wear is merely a matter of habit or culture. But being a little more careful in our choices of dresses you may earn a bit more in kind. Dressing yourself differently with your clothes might be an effective way of changing the impression others have of you.

It has been observed that our attire influences all kinds of impressions about us. Our clothes make significant differences about how people perceive us and that’s too without us being aware of it or in ways we can even hardly think of. People make their assessments in the first few seconds of seeing someone; assessments that often go way beyond how well one is dressed and how spick and span one might look.

People would perceive a man as more confident, successful, versatile and a higher earner when he is in a tailor-made suit than when he wears a high street equivalent.

So, our clothes say a great deal about who we are and can to a great deal can emit signal of socially important elements to others, even if the impression is actually unfounded.

It is important to choose our dress style carefully because dress is the only evidence likely to be available to people based on which they will make all sorts of assumptions and decisions about us. Though in most cases we are unlikely to know what these assessments are but it is quite possible that our attire had revealed more than we had guessed.

Sartorial laziness is an easy habit to slip into. We may think that fashion is just profligate indulgence and our sunny personality will eclipse our dull attire or detract from the food stains on our shirt. Absolutely Untrue!!

This doesn’t mean one has to be a Fashion addict & start following the trends, matches every step to ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ and like ways. We need to figure out our very own personal style. It may not be the ‘in’ thing but it gives out the right message about our personality, about who we are. What we wear speaks volumes in just a few seconds. Dressing to impress really is worthwhile and could even be the key to success.
