When the 3 stalwarts of Kaanchi came together

By Affaf Ansari

Mumbai, June 8 (Washington Bangla Radio): When we entered the sets of Kaanchi, at Whistling Woods Studios, Film City, things were being set up. The crew was preparing the space for shooting a jail sequence while director-producer Subhash Ghai was supervising the work. Shortly after, yesteryear star Rishi Kapoor entered the set and inquired from Ghai, “Are we going to shoot here?” to which the latter said yes. While Ghai showed him to a chair, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty entered the set looking a little irked. Apparently, he’d been kept waiting for a long time before the shoot. But as soon as the three stalwarts grouped together, something magical happened. Keeping their woes aside, the three men broke into a friendly chatter, laughing and giggling while discussing things. Watching the three stalwarts letting their guard down was a rare treat.

Rishi Kapoor, actor

Nothing has changed over the years except technology and the fact that we have grown fatter. I am thankful that Subhash thought of me for this role. I used to play a quintessential romantic hero in his films and, in this one, I am playing the quintessential villain. Mithun is a very disciplined actor. It was fun working with him in Housefull 2 (2012). He is a good friend and it is always great to work with actors from your time.

Mithun Chakraborty, actor

We (Mithun and Subhash) didn’t click when we were at our peaks. He (Subhash) had his stardom and I had mine. We didn’t even get the opportunity to work together. My house was just opposite his office but I never auditioned for his films. I have worked with Chintuji (Rishi Kapoor) a long time ago. I had a small sequence in Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1978). I was a struggler at that time. It’s nice to work with him again.

Subhash Ghai, filmmaker

Rishi Kapoor is more patient today than he was during Karz (1980). There is no problem with Mithun Chakraborty and Rishi, but I had to handle their egos as well, not because they are expressing their egos, but because they are built this way.
