Sunil Gangopadhyay & Suman Mukhopadhyay at Sesher Kobita Audio Launch in 2011

Calcutta, June 9, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) April 2011 saw one of the most remarkable audio album releases of the year in Kolkata when noted director Suman Mukhopadhyay (interview) wrote the script along with Ujjal Chatterjee for a musical drama adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's 1929 classic "Shesher Kobita" (Orion Entertainment). Eminent actors Dhritiman Chatterjee, Chitra Sen, Debshankar Haldar, Biswajit Chakrabarty, Sujan Mukherjee, Sreelekha Mitra (interview), and Sudipa Basu along with renowned elocutionist Bratati Banerjee lent their voices to that project while Rabindrasageet wizards Srabani Sen and Supratik Das performed songs to music designed by Prabuddha Banerjee. The album was launched at a memorable event in the presence of poet-writer Sunil Gangopadhyay.

In a development many people would consider natural progression, Suman Mukhopadhyay has recently gone on the floors with a cinematographic adaptation of Sesher Kobita, casting Konkona Sen Sharma as Labannya, Rahul Bose as Amit Ray, Swastika Mukherjee as Ketaki and others. Reigning Tollywood queen Rituparna Sengupta was also one of the actresses considered for the lead role of Labannya.

When asked in an interview with WBRi about his choice of Rahul Bose and Konkona Sen Sharma as Amit and Labanya respectively, Suman said somewhere in Rahul’s look he found the image of Amit and the character of Labanya as described in the book was not of someone who was traditionally beautiful or good looking. Her intelligence was her beauty. Konkona Sen Sharma has a very intelligent look and he thinks she is the right choice for the role of Labanya. The film is already being shot in Shillong with shooting in Kolkata and England coming next. Shesher Kobita may be released by the end of 2012.
