Tollywood Kolkata Bengali Cinema Actress Parno Mitra with guitarWashington, DC, June 18, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Actress Parno Mitra, who plays the title role of Ranjana in Anjan Dutta's Bengali film "Ranjana Ami Aar Ashbo Na" (2011), chats with Ananya Paul in this interview. Parno also sings a snippet of her introductory song "Chalo Jai" for us (this song is performed by playback singer Somlata in the film).

We regret the poor audio and excessive background noise which is often ambient in Kolkata where most automobile drivers tend to blare their horns too much.

Parno expresses her excitement in having had the opportunity to play the lead female role in a film by, and co-starring, Anjan Dutta.  "I am in seventh heaven, flying high", says Parno, describing how she had always been a great admirer of Anjan. Though Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na is her debut full-length feature film, Parno has worked previously with Anjan in a telefilm. Parno is the unanimous choice for the title role of Ranjana of Anjan Dutta, his wife Chanda Dutta and singer-songwriter-composer son Neil Dutta who is also a close friend of Parno.

The character Ranjana is of a small-town girl - an orphan who idolizes the hugely popular singer and rock-star Abani Sen (Anjan Dutta) as her idol. Ranjana grew up listening to songs by Abani's group and dreams of becoming a star like Abani Sen herself. The film portrays the journey of Ranjana to stardom and the story of Abani Sen rediscovering himself over that journey after having descended into despair after losing his expecting wife in a fatal car crash.

Parno describes her experience of working with Anjan Dutta as a director, musician and co-actor and how she learnt playing the guitar - she was given two months to learn to play the guitar with sufficient proficiency to play three songs !

Parno's next film that she is already working on is titled "Bedroom" directed by Mainak Bhaumik. In Bedroom, Parno plays the role of a woman who is extremely unhappy and irritated with everything and upsets others with her attitude and perpetual complaints. Bedroom also stars Tanushree Chakraborty, Abir Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, Rahul, Rudranil Ghosh and Ushasie Chakraborty.

The actress expresses gratitude for having learnt a lot from acting in television serials and indicates her preference for working with feature films going forward. We will no doubt see Parno Mitra continue her rapid ascent in Indian cinema in the coming months and days.

Ranjana Ami Aar Ashbo Na ( is a "Bengali rock-musical" movie written and directed by Anjan Dutta, starring Anjan Dutta, Parno Mittra, Amyt Datta, Nondon Bagchi, Lew Hilt, Ushasie Chakraborty and Kabir Suman. The film is produced by Rana Sarkar under the banner of DC Media. The release date of the film is June 24, 2011.
