“Kolkata has got huge amount of talented boys and girls. They are very sincere and willing to learn. This is the reason why I have my dance academy only in this city and not anywhere in India” said ace choreographer Ganesh Acharya who also recently turned actor with the film ‘Any Body Can Dance’ (the highly successful first 3D Dance film of India) during his recent visit to his dance school in Kolkata which bears the name “Ganesh Acharya Dance Academy”.

Despite having a dancing academy in Kolkata, the choreographer has not been approached by any director to choreograph any Bengali film song. “I think they are scared of me and hence they do not approach me. However I am letting you all know that I am open to work with them. I have seen the choreography of the recent Bengali films with Dev and Jeet and I think they are doing a great job.”

The choreographer has been working in this industry for the past twenty five years, feels that there have been changes in the perception of the audience and in the way they accept dance now. The dance style is the same. “My dance is of typical Bollywood masala style. You can have everything in this style- salsa, hip hop, jazz and so on. I feel that the dance should be such so that every common man can try and do it” said Ganesh Acharya. The choreographer who was one of the group dancers in the evergreen song Ek Do Teen from the film ‘Teezav’ featuring Madhuri Dixit said “She dances not only with the help of her hand and body movements, she expressed herself with her eyes too. The same is the case with Govinda. The new actors and actresses like Hrithik, Ranbir, Deepika, Katrina all dance well but I still feel they cannot match up with the dancing skills of Madhuri and Govinda”. He has plans of making a dance film in his own signature style with big names. If Madhuri Dixit and Govinda agree then he might make the film with them.

Item songs are the rage in recent times. The choreographer feels that it will be better to term them as “good songs”. He feels that as choreographers, one must make the song look good so that the audience can enjoy it with their friends and family members. Not one of his item songs like Chikni Chameli, Chamma Chamma is vulgar or raunchy. They are played at weddings and birthday parties.

Remakes of popular and cult songs is another thing which the choreographer do not support. Songs like “Dhak Dhak karne laga” or “Naino mein sapna” are cult songs and trying a remake of them is a foolish step by any choreographer. It is next to impossible to do better than the original song.

A number of choreographers like Farha Khan, Remo De Souza have been seen as judge in dance reality shows. But ganesh Acharya had always tried to stay away from this role. The choreographer said “What I look for is talent and truth. Truth is something which I am unable to find in any dance reality show. The day when I am able to understand the concept of any dance reality show and find that talent is there, I will be a part of the show. I will not be a part of a show simply due to the money.”

Having worn the hat of an actor in ABCD, the choreographer is busy reading scripts at the moment. As far as his choreography is concerned, he has recently choreographed the song “Dilliwali Girlfriend” with Ranbir and Deepika in the upcoming film Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani and it has already been declared a hit. Apart fom this, he is also busy with Ram Leela, Grand Masti and Police Giri.

Ganesh Acharya visits the institute twice or thrice every year. The institute from which about sixteen thousand students have been trained is in its eighth year now. We wish the institute all the best for their endeavors.
