Mrinal Sen turns 91, Birthday Celebrated with Photo Exhibition

Mumbai, May 21 (Washington Bangla Radio): “Who says he is ninety one? He is just a nineteen year old boy. He is evergreen and simply cannot age” said Sreela Majumdar at the inauguration of the photo album and photo exhibition on eminent Indian film director Mrinal Sen. The photo exhibition was inaugurated at the newly opened Camerana camera store and photo gallery at E-Mall. The exhibition features photographs of Mrinal Sen by two eminent photographers Dipanjan Ghosh and Pratap Dasgupta. Present at the inaugural ceremony were Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Raja Sen, Sreela Majumdar, Arindam (of Kolkata Bangla Band Kaya), painter Wasim Kapoor, dancer Sukalyan and CEO of Camrena Anup Kanodia.

Well known photographer Jagdish Mali passed away recently and the assembled crowd observed a minute’s silence in remembrance.

The photo exhibition features photographs of Mrinal Sen in various moods. Most of the pictures captured Sen in deep thought in his home. The play of light and shadow on the face of the director make him look different in every picture.

Raja Sen has worked with the director in many of his films, and said “After watching the pictures, I feel that he is with us.” He thanked Camarena for organizing such a photo exhibition and for giving artists such a gallery for showcasing their pictures.

Sreela Majumdar has acted in many of Mrinal Sen’s films like “Khandhar”, “Ek din Pratidin” and “Akale Sandhane” and felt honored to be a part of such an exhibition. The actress wished Mrinal Sen would come to the exhibition. However he could not attend this exhibition on the inaugural day. The actress shared some moments that she had with the director. “Since I lost my father at a young age, he is like a father figure to me. He guided me, scolded me and praised me when I did a good job. Working with him helped me learn the nuances of acting. I remember when I used to portray an expression after a shot and he used to say it became difficult to cut the shots,” said the outstanding actress.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury was present at the exhibition and expressed his gratitude to the director for masterpieces as they inspired and motivated him to make films. The director highlighted the emotions that Sen's films evoked are mind blowing in nature.

Mrinal Sen’s film Chalchitra was also re-released at this exhibition.

Eminent painter Wasim Kapoor said, “I have seen this kind of galleries outside India. A gallery of this dimension will be of much help to artists. I will surely recommend my friends and fellow artists to showcase their work here.”

CEO Anup Kanodia highlighted the aim of Camarena at the event. The company believes in the youth of today. “At Camarena photo gallery, we will be giving them space for shooting and experimenting free of cost. People can do group and even solo exhibitions.”

Mrinal Sen, could not come to the inaugural ceremony.
