Kolkata, May 29, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) An event for a Bangali by a Bangali best describes the whole purpose of the event Aparajito Nayak. The evening of May 26th saw the coming together of the entire Bangla film fraternity at Hotel Hyatt Regency to join hands with the organizers of the event Sri Subrata Roy and the Sahara Pariwar to felicitate Sri Soumitra Chatterjee on his achievement. It was indeed a special evening with all the Tollywood stars illuminating the auditorium with of course Soumitra Chatterjee being the center of attraction and appreciation.

Tollywood’s heart-throb actor Prosenjit Chatterjee being the host of the event on behalf of Subrata Roy was among the first ones to arrive at the venue. Not only was he overwhelmed to be a part of such a wonderful occasion but was equally busy ensuring that the arrangements were all in perfect order to make the evening all the more special. Talking about the guest list, only saying that the entire Bangla film fraternity was present would just be enough. Right from the present day Tollywood celebrities like Jeet Ganguly and Abir Chatterjee to the veterans like Ranjit Mullick, Indrani Sen and Moon Moon Sen, all were there to be a part of the ceremony that is so close to every Bangali’s heart.

After a short AV on the lives of Sahara Sri Subrata Roy and Sri Soumita Chatterjee, they were called on stage to start the felicitation ceremony. Sri Roy first handed over a “Manpatra” (certificate of honour) to Sri Chatterjee, the citation in which had been penned by Sri Shrisendu Mukherjee and was read out to the audience by Sutapa Bandopadhyay. Other awards that were presented include a portrait of Sri Soumitra painted by Wasim Kapoor, a silver trophy to commemorate the Dada Saheb Phalke award, a silver sword as a symbol of the actor’s leading role in taking Bengali cinema to an unsurpassed level and a check of Rs 11 Lakh contributed by a trust made by some of the most prominent Kolkatans like Prasenjit, Gautam Bhutoria and others.

Now was the turn of Smt. Sapna Roy Sahara (a.k.a Badi Bhabhi) to handover her collection of gifts to the veteran actor. Smt Roy’s gifts clearly reflected the thought and affection that had gone behind the entire selection. First in order was a collection of music CDs and Books as Sri Chatterjee is an avid reader and music lover. The other gifts that followed were all good enough to make up a Bengali marriage “totto”. A gorgeous set of dhuti panjabi and to complete the totto, beautifully decorated platters of Mishti were handed over to this Hero of a million hearts.

Next was the turn of Sri Subrata Roy Sahara who was not only all praises for the great actor but also gave a direction to the Bangla Film industry to reach out to the masses and make its way to the top. Sri Roy also announced that Sahara has launched a production house by the name of Sahara Screen Entertainment Bengal Ltd which will be taken care of by our very own Prasenjit under the mentorship of Sri Chatterjee. Sri Roy has indeed very well utilized the experience and knowledge Sri Chatterjee with his extensive 53 year old career and over 400 films in the industry brings to the table.

It was now turn for Sri Chatterjee to take the dais and say a few words and what he said truly reflected the great virtues of the man. Sri Soumitra Chatterjee said that it is only now when he sees his well wishers so overjoyed at his achievement does he get a feeling that may be he has been able to serve mankind by way of entertaining them else all these years he always had this regret and void in his heart thinking that he has not been able to contribute in any way for the well being of his brethren. As per Sri Chatterjee, an opportunity to work with the poor and down trodden in some African labor colony might have given him a greater sense of fulfillment.

After the felicitation ceremony was now the turn of some great entertainment. The interesting line up of programs that were arranged for the evening began with Rupam Islam’s solo performance. This was followed by solo performances by Swapna Kundu and Raghab and some catchy dance numbers by the younger generation of Tollywood. As no Bengali function culminates without good food, there was a wonderful dinner and cocktail arrangement and the hosts ensured that their guests thoroughly enjoyed the event.

The evening finally came to an end leaving all with a feeling of great pride and honor for the veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee. Long live the actor and his versatility!
