Just Another Urban Golpo of a Few Hot Bengali Girls Premieres in Kolkata: Subrata Sen's "Koyekti Meyer Golpo" (Bangla, 2012)

Bengali Film Celebrities at premiere of Koyekti Meyer Golpo (2012)Kolkata May 26, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Friday the 25th of May 2012 witnessed a starry gathering at Priya Cinemas (at Rashbehari Avenue). No, it was not the spillover crowd from the premiere of Bikram Singha The Lion is Back which had been screened there the previous evening. In fact, it was the premiere of a whole new film – Subrata Sen’s new Bengali movie Koyekti Meyer Galpo which was scheduled to be hosted at the theater on the day. The movie boasted of a star-studded and almost all-girl list of actors - Raima Sen, Tanushree Chakraborty, Parno Mitra, Mumtaz Sorcar, Locket Chatterjee, Nimisha Dey Sarkar and others. With such a bevy of popular and beautiful divas gracing the big screen in the movie, can the evening be anything but a really well-attended occasion? And what a lovely evening it was!

The onus of ensuring that everything is running as per schedule on the premiere evening of a movie falls on the director of the concerned film, and Subrata Sen, one of the earliest arrivals at the theaters, seemed totally aware of his responsibilities in this regard. Sen, who has already made a name for himself in the Tollywood circles as a brave and dynamic filmmaker with movies like ‘Ek Je Achhey Konya’ and ‘Bibar’ already in his kitty, enthusiastically flitted along to all corners of the theater to make sure that everything lied in perfect order for the guests of the evening who would start to arrive at Priya Cinema soon.

The camaraderie among filmmakers in Tollywood was quite evident, with fellow-director Aniket Chattopadhyay (who has most recently made the laughathon ‘Goray Gondogol’) arriving at Priya Cinema pretty early. Celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh, along with wife Jaya Seal - the fine, sensitive actress in her own right - reached the theater complex soon enough as well. Press cameramen present at the theater went literally crazy to get the best picture of this well-known duo. Ace editor Rabi Ranjan Maitra, who incidentally had done the editing for the other major release of the week ‘Bikram Singha’ as well, was also amongst the early arrivals at the theater.

The talented young actor Subrata Dutta aka Subrat Dutt in Bollywood was one of the next to arrive at Priya Cinema. The actor was gracious enough to pose for the camera for a brief while as well as have a small chitchat with the press representatives. Subrata sounded confident that Koyekti Meyer Golpo will be well-received by viewers, particularly because this was the age of a new and ‘different’ genre of filmmaking - a time when crafty Bengali flicks like Teen Yaari Kotha found universal acclaim in Tollywood - while movies like Delhi Belly and Paan Singh Tomar went on to become big hits in the Hindi film industry. The actor also singled out actress Parno Mitra for particular praise and said that it was only because of Mitra’s continuous cooperation and friendliness that he has been able to do a decent job in the movie.

Locket Chatterjee, who plays the pivotal character of Tanya in Koyekti Meyer Golpo, made her appearance next at the theater complex, much to the delight of media photographers. The gorgeous Mumtaz Sorcar, who delivered quite a memorable act in her last outing Bhuter Bhabishyat, was also right on time as far as her arrival at Priya Cinema was concerned. Sujan ‘Neel’ Mukherjee was yet another celebrity guest who was present at the premiere function.

While some of the bigger names from the star cast of Koyekti Meyer Golpo could not manage to attend the premiere (Parno Mitra, Raima Sen, Tanushree Chakraborty) owing to prior commitments, a pleasant surprise awaited everyone during the evening. The nature of the surprise, you ask? Moon Moon Sen, the veteran and still every bit glamorous actress and, of course, Raima’s mother, added that extra dollop of style and sophistication to the evening with her presence at Priya Cinema. This, of course, seemed to make the cameramen present there all the more active. Actress Rachita, looking vibrant in a red outfit, attended the occasion as well.

With most of the guests already having arrived at the theater, everyone now headed upstairs where the movie would actually be screened. Director Subrata Sen, when onstage, was frank enough to admit that Koyekti Meyer Golpo might not be suitable for viewing for audiences from all age groups, particularly due to the generous amounts of slangs and profanity used in the film. Over the years, we have come to expect truly appealing movies from Subrata Sen and, profanities or not, we don’t expect Koyekti Meyer Golpo to be any different either.

We would like to wish all the cast and crew members of Koyekti Meyer Golpo the very best of luck. May this golpo win over the hearts of critics and general cinegoers alike!
