Bengali Actress Srabanti Malakar at VIKRAM SINGHA (2012) PremiereKolkata May 26, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Some good things in life never change. Spending a lazy, peaceful afternoon watching a cricket match at Eden Gardens definitely qualifies as one such enjoyable activity. Watching Prasenjit Chatterjee bashing up baddies (and romancing considerably younger heroines!) in a mainstream Bengali movie would be another nice example (at least for film buffs!) in this regard. The actor, who had, over the last few years, consciously shifted over to somewhat parallel, thought-provoking movies like ‘Autograph’, ‘Moner Manush’ and ‘22shey Shrabon’, makes a grand return to the commercial cinema with director Rajib’s ‘Bikram Singha – The Lion Is Back’ (no prizes for guessing who is being referred as the ‘lion’ here!). The premiere for this highly-anticipated film was held on the 24th of May at Priya Cinemas (Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata). Rather unsurprisingly, the evening turned out to be a truly momentous affair!

Bengali Actress Srabanti Malakar at VIKRAM SINGHA (2012) PremiereMovie premieres at Priya Cinema are typically characterized by the presence of top celebrities and star guests from the world of Bengali cinema. If Prasenjit happens to be the leading man in the concerned movie, the list of attendees get that extra dash of glitter, as was seen at the premiere of ‘Bikram Singha’. One of the first guests to arrive at the theater complex was the gorgeous and popular Tollywood leading lady Srabanti. The pretty actress (who had dubbed for the main heroine, Richa Gangopadhyay, in the movie) was accompanied by her young son and, of course, her husband Rajib, the man at the helm of ‘Bikram Singha’. In a brief interaction with the media, Srabanti stated that she was truly excited about the prospects of the movie. We share the feeling too!

If it is the premiere of the movie of one Tollywood matinee idol (Prasenjit, in this case!), can the other ruling heartthrob stay away from the occasion? Of course not! Dev, arguably the biggest star of mainstream Bengali cinema at the moment, made his appearance (with his charming smile in tow!) soon enough at Priya. Anusmriti, who essays an important character in ‘Bikram Singha’, was also punctual enough, arriving at the theater well before the movie screening was supposed to start. Editor Rabi Ranjan Moitra, whose professional talents had helped to lend a smart and slick feel to ‘Bikram Singha’, was also amongst those present.

The glamour quotient of the evening went up by several notches with the arrival of the lovely Nusrat Jahan. Looking stunningly beautiful in a red top, the ‘Shatru’ lady confessed that she was die-hard fan of ‘Bumba-da’ (as Prasenjit is fondly known as in the Tolly circles). Needless to say, press photographers bounded along with their cameras, to get a nice snap of the stylish actress.

The evening was not all about established stars, however. Music director Sri Pritam was marking his first foray in the Bengali film industry with ‘Bikram Singha’ and the man looked dapper in a casual white shirt, as he entered the cinema complex. Surajit, the actor who plays a negative role in the movie, also reached Priya pretty soon. The candid and sincere side of the man was on show as he agreed to answer whatever questions the media personnel had to pose to him. Apart from elaborating on his character in ‘Bikram Singha’, Surajit also expressed his excitement at having got the chance of sharing screen space with Prasenjit. Abir ‘Byomkesh’ Chatterjee, one of the regulars at the movie premiere functions at Priya cinema, graced the occasion with his presence too.

The stage was now all set for the arrival of the man himself, Prasenjit Chatterjee. The ever-enthusiastic actor was greeted with the loudest of cheers as he reached Priya Cinema and was almost instantly mobbed by the journalists present there (that is, as far as they could get!). Sporting a smart look, the cynosure of all eyes said that he was a big fan of the vocal talents of tried and tested singers (hence the presence of veterans, like Bappi Lahiri and Kumar Sanu, in the list of playback singers in the movie). Prasenjit also said that he has been following the IPL this year and was happy at the brilliant performance that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had managed to put up this season. The actor also joked that, as he had been supporting KKR for so long, the franchise should also support the ‘Bikram Singha’ team back. Quite logical, when one thinks of it!

Several other celebrities from the Tollywood fraternity were also present at the premiere of ‘Bikram Singha’. Sudeshna, one of the directors of the recent hit ‘Teen Yaari Katha’, attended the event and was all praise for Prasenjit’s performance in the movie. While the talented filmmaker did point out the illogical nature of certain incidents in the film, she also stated with conviction that only a star of Prasenjit’s caliber could carry off a film like ‘Bikram Singha’ on his shoulders.

Here’s wishing the entire team of ‘Bikram Singha’ all the very best on our behalf. May Prasenjit be successful in rolling back the years and prove to one and all that he is still a force to reckon with in the world of commercial Bengali cinema.
