Interview: Suvrajyoti and Tanusree Bandopadhyay of Sabita Kala Sangam Working in Support of Performing Arts of Bengal

Calcutta, May 11, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Sabita Kala Sangam was established in 1997 by Suvrajyoti and his wife Tanusree Bandopadhyay who herself is a well known  singer of Rabindra Sangeet, with the inspiration of the Rabindra Sangeet exponent Late Sri Subinoy Roy. The prime objective was to promote various forms of performing arts and cultural activities like music, songs, dance, recitations, etc. and bring forward talented artists in these genres.

Lately the organization is working on various projects to highlight the rich heritage of India. One such show, a musical dance drama Lopamudra based on the romantic story of Hindu saint Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra received considerable appreciation both from viewers and critics.

The organization is about to stage a musical dance drama named Mahaprabhu based on the life of Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya in the near future.

Sabita Kala Sangam has staged quite a number of programs to raise funds for the needy.

Tanusree Banerjee has a masters in Political Science and is a trained computer technologist, though she decided to choose music as her career. She is a Sangeet Prabhakar from reputed Prayag Sangeet Sammelan, Allahabad. She is a student of Indian Classical vocal with Ustad Sagiruddin Khan Saheb. She is very fond of Rabindrasangeet from her childhood and trained in peforming Tagore songs with legendary singers like Sri Dwijen Mukherjee, Late Sri Subinoy Roy and Late Smt. Geeta Ghatak as her gurus. She has also taken training of folk and modern songs from Sri Dilip Karmakar.

This versatile singer participates in various programs organized by Government and Non-Government organizations like the Department of Information & Culture, Ministry of West Bengal. She has participated in all the ‘Sangeet Mela’ events organized by the Association of Performing Singers, and in various programs organized by ‘Banga Sanskriti Sanmelan’, ‘Viswa Banga Sahitya Samprachar Samity’, Aurobindo Ashramas and many more in and around Kolkata and all over India like Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bihar, Jharkhand, etc.

Besides singing, she runs a software technology consulting business as well as a tours and travels organization.
