Calcutta, May 10, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Discovery Channel, one of the leading channels for non fictional programmes in the world is also present in 3 languages in India other than English. They are Hindi (introduced in 1998), Tamil (introduced in 1st Jan 2010) and Telugu (introduced on 1st Jan 2011). The channel announced the launch of it’s Bengali feed for millions of people across the state of West Bengal, India at a gala event organized at Taj Bengal, Kolkata.

The programmes of the channel will remain the same; just that they will also be aired in Bengali in the future as well. The channel will also introduce 13 programme series, 6 returning series and other topical shows. The 13 premier series includes shows like Air Crash Confidential, Monster Bug Wars, We Built This City, Wildlife etc. The 6 returning series includes programmes like I Shouldn’t Be Alive, Whale Wars, Build It Bigger, How Do They Do It etc. The topical shows include programmes like Mega Quake: Hour That Shook Japan, Emergency in Fukushima etc.

Discovery Channel which is part of Discovery Communications and includes other renowned channels like Discovery Science, Discovery HD World and Animal Planet hopes to retain it’s existing viewers and also increase it’s viewership by leaps and bounds. According to Mr. Rahul Johri, Senior Vice President and General Manager South Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific who was present on the occasion and addressed the media, their viewership has increased by 30% just during the testing stage.

The channel is expected to go on air from 1st June with 14 -15 hrs of the feed being in Bengali out of 24 hours.
