Kolkata, Apr 15 (IBNS): In West Bengal, the campaign of a high profile election is not all about sweating it out at the mammoth rallies and roadshows. It is also the time to unleash the best of the wisecracking Bengali mind.

Welcome to the Bengal elections of wall graffiti and posters packing sarcasm and caricature to run down each other's political rival.

So for Mamata Banerjee's "Stay with us [communists], your ticket to hell is confirmed" aimed at the Left is countered with the Railway Minister on board a "Maoist train" by the communists.

From hoardings to graffiti on the walls, the party workers are busy highlighting their party symbols and slogans, in every localitiy of the state and lampooning finds a special place.

Amidst all the tensions and verbal trade offs between the contesting parties, election in Bengal has a shade of humour offering a comic relief to the voters who never take their leaders on face value.

Continuing the traditions, humourous caricatures and lampooning find a place on the walls in the form of cartoons along with the sarcastic one or two liners in the 2011 polls.

West Bengal is going to a six-phase assembly polls from Apr 18 to May 10.

From North to South in Kolkata, the walls showcase the leaders performing the most bizarre activities.

The cartoons have targeted the leaders and their weak points quietly significantly.

Like in one of the cartoons in the one of the lanes of North Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee is shown as a cook preparing her favourite dish named ‘alliance’.

The cartoon surely punches the long and lasting fight between Congress and TMC over the preparation of the alliance between the two to fight the ruling Communist Party of India -Marxist (CPI-M)) in the elections.

It has also punched the TMC chief by indicating her "alliance" with Maoists in West Bengal,  a state reeling under left extremism for quite some time now.

In another cartoon, the Railway Minister is riding over a train along with a group of armed men and shouting the parody of a popular Bengali song ‘AI roko, roko, Maobadi Gari Ta thamao, ami neme jabo, ai gari jabe na ami bike chalia jabo’( Hey please stop the Maoist Train, I will like to get off and take a motorcycle ride to reach my destination).

In this year's election, the main focus of of CPI-M produced cartoons is towards the TMC and Congress alliance and alleged links between Banerjee's TMC and Maoists.

In one such cartoon, Banerjee is shown dragging the Congress leaders starting from Prime Minister Monomohan Singh to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

She has also been shown as a hawker hawking for votes as she promises to give people benefits from her possession called ‘Railways’.

Trinamool Congress on the other hand has taken on the Left's "Brand Bengal" and the failures and violence in Singur and Nandigram during the land movement.

"34 Years of Dhappayan" (34 Years of Fraud), says one Trinamool campaign replacing the world "shilpayan" or industrialization with "dhappayan" meaning hoodwinking people with lies.

Cartoons apart there are other campaign tools flooding this time and Trinamool is ahead in some.

From key rings to umbrellas, people can find the party symbol and the face of Mamata Banerjee every where.

So whatever, may be the results, and who ever forms the government, the elections will leave a humorous footprints like always.
