A Swiss Hotel Suite named after the eminent film maker Yash Chopra

Mumbai, April 13, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / Kreation Guru) Yash Chopra is not a Bollywood star but a great star of the Indian Film Industry in his own standing on whom much of Bollywood leans. He is an Indian filmmaker cum producer who is also known as a screenwriter. Some of the movies he produced are Deewar, Waqt, Kabhi Kabhi, Lamhe, Silsila, Chandni, Dil to Pagal Hai, Darr and Veer-Zaara. He has founded the Yash Raj Films (YRF), a movie production company of his own where his first movie, Daag was produced in 1973. Chopra, at 78 years of age, has produced about 46 films and directed about half of them.

Chopra has won several awards in his lifetime for his outstanding work. He has received Filmfare Award for the Best Director four times, Filmfare Power Award three times and Best Film Award for his movies four times. The list of his achievements and awards is exhaustive and is still rolling. Domestically, he has received 15 awards; he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and 2005 respectively by the Government of India. Not only India but even the world has recognized his work, and honored him. He has received honor from Great Britain (Leeds University, BBC, BAFTA), UAE (Dubai), S. Africa and Switzerland. In 2010, Switzerland honored him with the Swiss Ambassador Award because his movies helped promote ‘Brand Switzerland’. At present he is on Government of India’s panel for the Advisory Board of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Since the last ten years, he is the Vice President of the Film Producers’ Guild of India.

Amidst all these honors, recognitions and awards, Yash Chopra, Bollywood’s veteran filmmaker, has not left anyone guessing about his love for Switzerland and its breathtaking landscape which he has immortalized in his films; of special mention among these movies are Vijay, Chandni, Faasle and Dilwale Duihania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

For promoting the country’s image throughout the world, Switzerland has highly honored him yet again. He has been honored with the title of ‘Ambassador of Interlaken’, the first recipient of this title. Interlaken is a famous destination in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland.  Interlaken has also honored him by inaugurating a suite on his name, the ‘Yash Chopra Suite’ and a train, the ‘Yash Chopra Train’ last week. It was launched in Switzerland by Yash Chopra himself before the CEO of the Jungfrau Railways, Urs Kessler, complete with the signboard having Yash’s name and signature on it.  The train of DDLJ can now be availed by any Bollywood fan anytime in Switzerland. The event was hosted at Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa by the mayor of Interlaken, Urs Graf. Chopra with his wife, Pamela was in Switzerland to receive the honor on April 8, Friday. He received a silver plaque which will be displayed on the main street of Interlaken, Hoheweg.

Swiss dignitaries, who were present at the occasion, said that Yash Chopra had single-handedly helped improve the tourism of Interlaken worldwide through his movies. He has also been instrumental in improving Swiss-India relationship.
