Bangla Sanskriti Mela 2010, Kolkata, January 2010 - A WBRi Special Event Report
Mar 28, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) A special report from Kolkata by WBRi correspondent Subhomoy Mukherjee on Bangla Sanskriti Mela, 2010 held during 18 - 26 January, 2010.
Bangla Sanskriti mela is one among the biggest Bengali cultural events organized every winter at Vidyasagar Udyan, Calcutta ( popularly known as College Square). The week-long festival is popular both among the artists from different segments and the audience from different corners of society. It draws huge crowd every year.
The committee usually divides this weeklong festival in two major segments: cultural competition and program. This year, the usual weeklong festival was organized from 18th to 26th January, 2010.
Almost all eminent artists from the fields of music, dance, drama and elocution perform here along with new talents. The events were held between 1 PM through 10 PM every day.
Poet Shri Nirendranath Chakraborty formally opened this year’s festival and the opening ceremony was presided by another eminent poet Shri Sunil Gangopadhyay in presence of honourable guests like actor Shri Soumitro Chattopadhyay, Director Shri Tarun Majumdar, Artist Shri Washim Kapur, Poet Shrimati Chitra Lahiri, Dramatist Shri Rudraprasad Sengupto and others.
The committee felicitated many eminent personalities like actors Shri Somitrio Chattopadhyay and Shrimati Sabitri Chattopadhyay.
Chief Advisor of the program was Kolkata’s honourable Mayor, Shri Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
President of the committee is Shri Anadi Kumar Sahoo and General Secretary is Shri Santanu Ukil.
The program was enriched also with an Art exhibition, a Flower exhibition and stalls of art and handicrafts from different parts of Bengal.
