Actor Subrata Dutta (Subrat Dutt)Mar 25, 2010, by Subhomoy Mukheree, Washington Bangla Radio: Subrata Datta, known as Subrat Dutt in Mumbai, is a powerful award-winning character actor appearing in parallel, art-house as well as commercial films. Subrata talks to Washington Bangla Radio in an intimate and informal interview.

A multi-faceted talent, Subrata was born in Bankura district of West Bengal. He started watching films in huge numbers after graduating from high-school - as many as 25 films in 30 days. He eventually got involved with Jatra - the unique stage-drama form of Bengal, and also learnt various dance forms like Rabindra-nritya (Tagore dance) and Kathak dance. Subrata is also an accomplished artist and painter.

Soon he was selected for admission into NSD - The National School of Drama - which had teachers like Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Om puri and other contemporary stalwarts and icons of Indian cinema providing excellent training in the art of drama and acting. Subrat is the first Bengali at NSD with the highest number of main character roles in NSD productions.

Subrata thinks acting is an acquired art and can be perfected with training - prodigies born as great actors are numerically insignificant. He is comfortable with all kinds of roles in commercial and parallel art-house films. He started his career in Bollywood Hindi movie industry, and has started doing Bengali films recently. Bengali movie ACHIN PAKHI with Subrata Dutta and Manali Dey in lead roles was released in theaters in Kolkata on Mar 26, 2010. Ram Gopal Verma's RAKTA CHARITRA starring Subrata Dutta and others is also an eagerly awaited film.


The film Madholal Keep Walking got Subroto Dutta the best actor award at Cairo IFF 2009. Subrata Dutta's prior films include Hitlist (2009), 10:10 (2008), Chaturanga (2008), Tomar Jonyo (2008), Bibar/Calcuatta, Unabashed (2006), The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey (2005), Zameen (2003), Sala Bandar! Subroto Dutta is acting with veteran as well as upcoming actresses - he has appeared opposite Indrani Haldar, Rituparna Sengupta, Sreelekha and newcomer Manali Dey (who became famous playing MOURI in BOU KOTHA KAO TV Show).
