Kolkata, March 31, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): “The magic realism is what attracts me to Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's stories”, said internationally acclaimed film-maker Aparna Sen at a press conference for her Bengali feature film Goynar Baksho at a prominent hotel in Kolkata. Sen was accompanied by Konkona Sen Sharma, Aparajita Adya, Saswata Chatterjee, Pijush, Shrabanti, Sohag Sen, Mousumi Chatterjee and Manasi Bhattacharya.

Dressed in a pink and white Patiala, matching bangles and high heeled white pumps, Shrabanti said, “I was very excited on getting a call offering me an opportunity to work in an Aparna Sen film. Every day at shooting was special. I attended a workshop for a film for the first time, too”. Srabanti plays a young pishima who speaks Bangal dialect that was difficult for the actress. The director and Sohag Sen helped her to get a convincing accent. Srabonti also revealed she is working in an yet-to-be-titled Bangla movie opposite Hiran directed by Rajib Guha.
“I was scolded the most by the director. However she made it up later with affection after pack ups. This film has contributed immensely to my growth as an actress”, added Shrabonti.
Aparna Sen also said, “This has been my dream project and I have been planning to make this film for the past ten years. However due to one problem or the other, the project got delayed. I told Sohag about my plan to make this film at a restaurant in Mumbai. After completing each film, I would bring this topic up. However I have now understood that everything has a right time”.
The film is about three generations of women and a jewelry box, and about changing circumstances of the women and society. The director feels the jewelry box can be seen as a metaphor.
Aparna Sen was full of appreciation of her cast and crew. She had special praise for Ashok Chowdhury whose special effects are crucial for her film, costume designer Sraboni Das and her efforts in locating the saris of the time period of the film, and Ananya Chowdhury of a popular Jewelry retailer for her dedication in creating beautiful jewelry.

Konkona Sen talked about her character Sharma in the film, “The character of Somlata is very challenging as I had to stammer. Apu da (Saswata) helped me a lot in this. The other challenge is that Somlata is not a courageous woman. Though I am afraid of ghosts and water, I am not like her and therein lies the challenge.”
Shrabanti and Mousumi
Composer and music director Debojyoti Mishra said, “I used to forget at times the high or the low pitch. But Rina Di has a sharp memory. She used to correct me.” This is his second film with Aparna Sen after Iti Mrinalini.
