Kolkata, March 27, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Cricket is a religion in India. Everyone loves to play and watch the game with great passion. Even those who have scores of fan cannot help themselves being a fan of this game. The same passion and love for cricket urged the film fraternities of Tollywood to organize a friendly cricket match which was played between two of the largest film production and distribution houses of Bengal: Priya Entertainment and Venkatesh films.

The film industry was divided into two teams to have a face off at 22 yards of Gitanjali stadium in Kolkata only to come together to entertain the spectators in the stadium and also all those who got glued to their television screens to watch the match. Priya Entertainments or the Blue team looked a bit heavyweight on star value as they had superstar Dev, Parambrata, Indraneil Sengupta, Sujjoy Ghosh, Joy Mukherjee and their captain Arijit Dutta among the star faces from film Industry. Srijit Mukherjee, Soham, Mahendra Soni and Srikant Mohta were among the pouplar faces of Sri Venkatesh Films or the Red Team. Payel Sarkar, Tota Roy Chowdury and Gaurab was seen present at the stadium as spectators.

The match started with Priya Entertainments winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Joy Mukherjee and Indraneil Sengupta opened the innings for Priya Entertainment. Runs started to flow from the very first over as both the batsmen seemed to be in full flow. After a quick fire partnership of sixty two Joy got out attempting a big hit.

The departure of Joy brought in Dev, the heartthrob of Bengali film Industry and the crowd welcomed him with thunderous applause. Dev seemed to be struggling facing the uneven bounce which the underprepared pitch was producing. But Dev did manage to hit a couple of boundaries and a huge sixer before his wicket fell.

Among the many over-boundaries seen during the match, none could match the cheers and amount of noise received from the crowd  for the lone sixer from Dev’s willow. Silence prevailed for a few minutes as Dev walked back to the pavilion after a brief but eventful cameo in batting gears.

But it was Indraneil Sengupta who continued the free flow of runs from the other side. He seemd to be a master of all shots as he produced some genuine cricketing shots taking the breath out of bowlers. He was also seen respecting good deliveries and rotating the strike. He was sending the ball in every direction keeping the fielders busy in every corner of the field. He was greeted with a well deserved applause, both by his team mates and the spectators.

Arijit Dutta, lovingly called Dadul-da, also scored some quick runs before he left the field due to an injury. Parambrata also fell cheaply after that.

The run-rate went down as soon as Indraneil got out and the Red team got some control back over the game. At the mid point of Priya’s innings, it seemed that they will score no less than 200 in the allotted 20 overs. But Venkatesh film managed to restrict them to 177.

Sri Venkatesh films started their innings in comparatively difficult batting conditions as the pitch had got broken after the first innings and rough patches were noticed all over the pitch. Moreover inadequate lighting seemed to be another problem. So the result was just as expected and the wickets began to tumble for Venkatesh Films.

But all of what happened was not due to the adverse conditions. The bowlers of Blue team rally made it difficult for the Batsmen of the Red team to score runs. Also the fielding of the Blue team was exceptional. The young guns from the team like Dipanjan Basak, Sujjoy Ghosh and Kaushik demonstrated some great fielding and saved a lot of runs. The only batsman who could stand up for The Red team was Anirban Aditya who tried his level best to take his team home.

But as the required rate shot up over 10 per over, he became a victim of the immense pressure. Some intelliegient spin bowling from Joy Mukherjee doubled the misery of the Red batsmen. They just could not read Joy’s flight and turn and wasted too many balls.

With some 30 runs required in the last over, the clelebration for Priya Entertainment started as the target seemed impossible to achieve. But a couple of sixes from Srijit Mukherji at the close of the game provided some great entertainment but was not enough to make his Red team the winner.

Numerous prizes were given away and everyone seemed to have a place at the award ceremony. Anirban Aditya bagged the maximum number of prizes which included the ‘Man of the match’ award.
