Kolkata, March 26, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): The climax of Indian Bollywood supernatural thriller "Aatma" is refreshingly different from other films of the genre. Suparn Verma’s experiments with twisting the plot in innovative ways are successful.

In the story of Atma, Abhay (Nawazuddin Siddique) dies soon after getting divorced from Maya (Bipasha Basu) but his spirit returns to haunt Maya and their six-year old daughter Nia (Doyel Dhawan), who Abhay was very fond of. The conflict in the film is about Abhay the apparition's attempts to take Nia with him to his world on the other side and Maya and Nia's struggle with the supernatural to stop that from happening. Yes - Nia does get possessed by Abhay in the plot and lots of people around them die as well.

As seen previously in "Acid Factory", Suparn Verma is a rare Bollywood writer-director who thinks different. Sure there are the common elements of a possessed-kid story, but Aatma also has many aspects that are new in Indian horror cinema. The film's innovative camera work adds to the surprises.

Some are wondering if Bipasha Basu wants to leave a mark as the Bogey Woman of Bollywood. Her performance as the mother fighting forces of other worlds is not her best. Nawazuddin Siddique's limited appearance betrays his brilliance as an actor in flashes. Doyel Dhawan as the sweet little girl has ben handled really well and the director seems to have succeeded in bringing her best out.

Overall Atma as a supernatural horror film may not be the best, but is unlikely to disappoint lovers of the genre. They are sure to applaud the climax, if nothing else. The buzz is Aatma is the first in a horror trilogy - we will wait for the sequels with interest.
